The mild weather that prevailed through much of December continued into the first week of January before seasonably colder conditions settled in the rest of the month. Overall the month finished about 3 degrees above normal.. but this was mainly due to the exceptionally mild start to the month when temperatures averaged 10 to 20 degrees above normal, culminating with a record high of +8.3C on the 7th. The coldest period of the month was during the third week when temperatures dipped to a low of -30.0C on the 23rd. The cold snap was brought in by a strong Arctic ridge of high pessure which peaked at 1048 mb on the 23rd.. the highest pressure recorded so far at my station. Snowfall for the month totalled 16 cm spread evenly through the month on 5 days. The event of the month was on the 17th when a cold front brought 6 cm of snow along with strong winds and blowing snow that gave near blizzard conditions over Southern Manitoba. Numerous roads were closed for several hours that evening including the TransCanada between Winnipeg and Brandon.
