The first 13 days of the month were all well below normal, with a mean temperature of -19C, some 10 degrees below normal. The cold streak included the winter’s coldest temperature of -34.7C recorded on the 2nd. On the 14th however, a major shift in the weather pattern allowed temperatures to finally climb above the freezing mark in Winnipeg for the first time since Jan 8 – a stretch of 64 consecutive days below freezing. From the 14th on, daily highs rose above freezing every day, climaxing with a 15.8 degree reading on the 22nd that allowed the snowpack of 26 cm on the 14th to virtually disappear in a week. Overall the month finished just 1 degree below normal.. but this was split between a first half that was 10 degrees below normal, and a second half that averaged 7 degrees above normal. Precipitation was near normal for the month.. with 20 mm of snow and rain falling, but on only 7 days. The largest single day precipitation event was an 11 cm snowfall on the 6th.
