The weather was uneventful through Boxing Day with only two meager snow events up to that point. That changed on the last weekend of the month when a low pressure system from the Rockies moved into the eastern Dakotas spreading snow over much of southern Manitoba on the 27th-28th, mixing with some rare December rain over the Red River Valley and east. About 20 to 30 cm of snow was recorded over southwestern Manitoba and the interlake regions from this storm while Winnipeg and southeastern MB escaped with about 2 to 5 cm of slushy snow and rain. Behind this low a secondary system spread another area of snow over Southern Manitoba on the 29th-30th giving 10 to 15 cm of snow to Winnipeg and the Red River valley. By the end of the month snow depth was about 17 cm at my location, although most of the month saw a meager snow cover of around 4 or 5 cm. Overall monthly precipitation during December was 30 mm for the month, with 27 cm of snow and 3 mm of rain. This was above average (normal 18 mm for Deecember), making it the first month of above normal precipitation in Winnipeg since May. However most of the month was quite dry with the bulk of precipitation falling in the last few days of the month. Temperatures were above normal almost every day during December.. aside from a brief cold snap in the middle of the month that saw temperatures drop to -27 at my site (-32 at the airport). The cold snap was short lived however with a return to mild conditions for Christmas week. Temperatures soared to a high of +5C on the 21st, the warmest reading during the month. Christmas Day was mild and dry with highs around the freezing mark.. some 12 degrees above the "normal" high for Christmas. Overall, the month finished with an average temperature of -9C, over 5 degrees above normal - the 4th December in the past 5 years to feature above normal temperatures over southern Manitoba.
