SNOWY MONTH WITH A COLD FINISH.. Jan 2004 will be remembered as a snowy month in Winnipeg with 56 cm of snow recorded at my site, over twice the normal January snowfall of 23 cm. The month was highlighted by a heavy snowfall of 14 cm on Jan 2nd-3rd that brought blizzard conditions to much of southeastern Manitoba resulting in the closure of several highways, including Highway 75 from Winnipeg to the US border. Snowcover was the deepest since the winter of 1996-97 with 45 cm on the ground by the end of the month. Temperatures for the month averaged about 2 degrees below normal, mainly as a result of a frigid Arctic outbreak at the end of the month that saw temperatures drop to the -40 mark at the Winnipeg airport on the 29th and 30th, the first -40 reading in Winnipeg since Feb 1996. The cold was accompanied by bitter windchills of -50 or lower on the 29th resulting in the closure of many schools and activities across Southern Manitoba.
