It was a mild but wet October across southern Manitoba with a notable lack of sunshine, especially over the last 3 weeks when cloudy skies and frequent rainfalls dominated the weather over southern Manitoba. The first few days of the month were cooler than normal but that quickly changed by the 5th when a westerly flow and sunny skies sent temperatures up to the 25 degree mark in Winnipeg. That marked the beginning of a pleasant week of late summer weather between the 5th and the 11th when temperatures were near or above 20 degrees each day along with plenty of sunshine. The nice weather prevailed right through the Thanksgiving weekend much to the delight of southern Manitobans. However that would prove to the last spell of nice weather for the month as a cold front on the 12th brought in cloudy skies and some rainfall. That would mark the beginning of a 3 week stretch of cloudy and damp weather that would continue right through the end of the month. From the 12th through the 31st there was only one mainly sunny day in Winnipeg (25th). The weather was particularly damp and gloomy between the 19th and 24th when the average humidity was over 90% each day with plenty of low cloud along with rain drizzle or fog. The excess humidity made it very difficult or impossible for local farmers to get into their wet fields to harvest any remaining crops that could salvage an otherwise disastrous growing season. Overall, temperatures for the month averaged about 1 degree above normal, thanks in large part to the warm spell between the 5th and 11th and also due to the lack of freezing temperatures in the last 10 days of the month. Rainfall was frequent with 15 days of measurable precipitation, especially after the Thanksgiving holiday when 12 days of precipitation were recorded. Overall, the monthly rainfall total of 52 mm was almost 50% above normal. There was also 1 cm of wet snow recorded on the 14th during a mid month cold spell. All in all, a soggy but mild October.
