December 2004 was best characterized by it highly variable weather with frequent fluctuations between cold spells and mild spells, as well as a month end blizzard that dumped heavy snow to Winnipeg and southern Manitoba. Temperature-wise the month finished just slightly above normal (normal at YWG airport) but that statistic masked the large temperature variability noted throughout the month. A good example of this was during the 17th to 21st when a monthly high of +5C on the 17th was followed with a -20C high the very next day. Two days later the temperature rose close to the freezing mark before falling back into the -20s on the 21st. Temperatures would remain cold in the week leading up to Christmas with a low of -31.5C on the 23rd. However temperatures would again moderate for the end of the month. The month ended on a snowy note when a strong winter storm system moving through the Dakotas brought 20 to 30 cm of snow to Winnipeg, much of which fell in a 5 hour span between 3 and 8 pm on the 29th. Overall the month finished with 45 cm of snow, but that was mainly due to the month end blizzard that dropped 26 cm at my location. Otherwise snow was fairly light with meager amounts through the month. Snowcover was generally in the 5 to 10 cm range most of the month before ending up at 33 cm by the 31st thanks to the snowstorm on the 30th.
