January 2005 was generally colder than normal for the first 3 weeks of the month before milder conditions moved in for the end of the month. The mean monthly temperature at Winnipeg airport was -19.6C, about 1.8C below the average of -17.8C for January. (-18.5C at my location) There were two main cold snaps during the month, one between the 2nd and 6th and the other between the 13th and 17th when temperatures were in the minus 20s during the day and minus 30s at night. The coldest reading at my location was -37.6C on the 5th while readings north and east of the city fell to -45C in Gimili on the 17th. (-38.6C at YWG airport on the 17th) Temperatures finally moderated during the last week of the month with near freezing temperatures on the 28th and 30th. Officially, the Winnipeg airport climbed above zero on Jan 30th with a high of +0.2C, the first above freezing temperature in the city since Dec 17th (43 consecutive days below freezing) Snowfall was above normal in January, thanks in large part to a 15 cm snowfall on the 1st to 2nd. The storm came just 2 days after a blizzard dumped 25 cm of snow to the city on Dec 30th to 31st. The sudden deep snow cover made it a challenge for Winnipeg snow removal crews to clear from city streets and sidewalks even though snowfall was meagre for the rest of the month. In all, 37 cm of snow fell at my location during January, over 60% above the average of 23 cm for January. Snowdepth peaked at 48 cm on January 2nd and was down to 37 cm by the end of the month.
