Mild weather that began in the last week of March persisted through much of April allowing the growing season to begin almost a month earlier than last year. In fact, through the first 3 weeks of the month, April 2005 was on pace to be the warmest April on record in Winnipeg with a mean of 9.1C through April 22nd. However a change in the weather pattern brought much colder temperatures and even snowfall during the last week of the month, lowering the monthly mean temperature below top ten honours. Even so, the month ended with a mean of 7.6c, (7.4C at Winnipeg aiport) some 3.5C above normal for April. This was in large part to the first 18 days of the month that were all above normal, culminating with a maximum temperature of 24C on the 18th. The mild weather over the first 3 weeks was marked by an unusual lack of frost that allowed the growing season to start early. There were only 2 days in the first 3 weeks of April that saw temperatures dip below freezing. This allowed plants to begin budding early as soil temperatures increased rapidly with the lack of frost. However, the cold weather in the last week of the month put a temporary halt to the growing season thanks to frequent frosts and daily snowfall. Precipitation was near normal for the month with about 30 mm of rain and about 4 cm of snow. However, most of the first 3 weeks were dry with the exception of a 26 mm rain event from the 11th to 12th. Sunshine was frequent in the first 3 weeks which allowed residents to enjoy many outdoor activities earlier than usual. Ironically, snow was non-existent in the month until the last week when minor amounts fell almost every day during the month end cold snap. Winnipeg also saw its first thunderstorm in the early morning hours of the 18th that included a rare "heat burst" at 6 am that brought 90 km/h winds to the Winnipeg airport, and a temperature jump from 13 to 21C in less than an hour. All in all.. a beautiful spring month that ended on a wintery note.
