After a promising start to spring with plenty of sunshine and mild temperatures through much of April, the weather turned unsettled and cool in May bringing concerns about a repeat of last year's disastrous growing season. Precipitation for the month totalled 70 mm, about 10 mm above average for May with frequent spells of wet weather. In fact, other than a 5-day stretch of dry weather at the beginning of the month, there was never more than 3 dry days in a row. The above normal precipitation and cool weather once again delayed seeding for area farmers due to saturated fields. Temperatures averaged over 1 degree below normal for the month, with frequent cool spells interspersed with brief warmups. Temperatures ranged from a high of 30.4C on the 20th to a low of -5.2 on the 2nd.
