After a wet and cool May, the last thing southern Manitoba farmers needed was more rain. Unfortuneatly, Mother Nature had different plans as she unleashed one of the wettest Junes in recent memory across southern Maniotba. Winnipeg was spared the heaviest of the rain recording about 140 mm for the month, about 50 mm above the June average. However outside the city, the story was worse.. much worse. To the west, south and east of Winnipeg, incessant bouts of rain, sometimes torrential, led to the wettest June on record in places like Brandon (216 mm), Melita (244 mm), Gretna (284 mm), and Gimli (192 mm). The heavy rains led to the highest levels of the Red River ever recorded so late in the year, rising to 20.5 feet by month's end. The heavy rains and lack of sun on waterlogged fields led to extensive overland flooding, with many fields too wet to seed or cultivate. Preliminary estimates are that a staggering 25% of farmland in southern Maniotba will be lost, resulting in hundreds of millions of dollars in crop losses. The month started out extremely wet and unsettled with rainfall on 11 of the first 14 days of the month. Sunshine was almost non-existent in the first two weeks, with no full days of sunshine until the 15th. That day signalled the beginning of a much needed 10 day spell of sunny dry warm weather that allowed some farmers to finally get a crop in. However unsettled weather returned in the last week of the month, including a month end deluge on the 29th-30th that dropped 50 to 100 mm of rain across much of southern Manitoba. That would spell the final straw for many farmers who had any hope of salvaging a crop this year. In addition to the rain, the month featured several bouts of severe weather in S. Manitoba, including a torrential 150-200 mm downpour near Melita on the 1st and a severe thunderstorm wind event in Gretna/Altona on the morning of the 19th with winds up to 140 km/h. Undoubtedly though, the month of June 2005 will be long remembered for its incessant rains, lack of sun, and resulting floods that sent river levels to their highest ever summer levels, and left a staggering blow to the agricultural, recreational and construction industries in the south.
