Plenty of sunshine, above normal temperatures and below average rainfall characterized much of September this year, allowing for a fine end to the summer. The mean temperature for the month was over 2 degrees above average, helped by 18 days with temperatures over 20 degrees, and a noticeable lack of cool spells. In fact, no frost was recorded during the month in Winnipeg allowing the growing season to extend longer than usual. The lowest temperature for the month was a 1.4C reading on the 25th. Normally, the season's first frost in Winnipeg is recorded around September 22nd. There were several spells of warm weather, including a summery start to the month with highs generally in the mid and upper twenties between the 3rd and 11th. The month ended on a summery note with highs reaching over 27 degrees on the 30th. Precipitation for the month ended up slightly below normal at 46mm (Sept average 52 mm) However, the bulk of the rain fell during two nighttime thunderstorms on the 5th (18 mm) and the 16-17th (15 mm) masking the overall dryness of the month. In fact, other than some light morning showers on the 13th, there was no measurable rain recorded during daylight hours in Winnipeg through the entire month. This allowed residents to take advantage of outdoor activities right into the end of September. Combined with a drier than normal August, the summer of 2005 has ended on a welcome dry note after an exceptionally wet start to the season. This has allowed soil moisture and river levels to stabilize to much more normal conditions before the upcoming winter.
