Continuing the trend of the past few years, December 2005 was another mild month over southern MB, averaging over 6 degrees above normal at my location. Of the past 9 Decembers since 1997, 7 have featured above normal temperatures over southern MB. Officially, December 2005 was the 15th mildest December on record at Winnipeg airport, thanks in large part to an exceptionally mild finish to the month that saw well above normal temperatures from the 22nd through the 31st. In fact, in an 8 day stretch between Dec 23rd and Dec 30th, the temperature failed to drop below the -5C mark, the longest such stretch on record in Winnipeg for a December. The previous longest strech of above -5 weather was 7 straight days (Dec 21st-Dec 27th) way back in 1877 during Winnipeg's warmest December on record. The streak is even more impressive considering average lows in Winnipeg for the end of December are -22c. The mild weather over the holidays has been welcome by most people enjoying the outdoors however snowmobilers and skating enthusiasts have been eager for a return to colder weather to harden snow and ice surfaces. In fact, area rivers such as the Red and Assinboine still had areas of open water at the end of the month. The month started off with a few days of colder than normal weather but quickly turned mild by the second week before another cold snap at mid month brought the coldest temperatures for the month, a rather modest -26 reading on the 18th. (-29.5 at YWG airport) After that, it was all above normal for the rest of the month with temperatures averaging some 10 to 15 degrees above normal from the 22nd through the 31st. The mild weather however came at the expense of sunshine with overcast skies providing no sun after the 21st along with a few periods of freezing drizzle and fog that created poor travelling conditions at times. Precipitation for the month was a little above normal with about 34 cm of snow at my location, compared to the average of 20 cm for December. The bulk of the snow however was concentrated over a 4 day span from the 14th to 16th when 21 cm of snow fell from a slow moving storm system. Other than that, snowfall was meager with only a few minor accumulations interspersed throughout the month. Snow depth was 15 cm at the end of the month, peaking at 22 cm on the 17th. Overall, another mild and relatively tame December.
