May 2006 was a variable month with wide swings in temperatures through the month. The first 3 weeks were generally cooler than normal (apart from a warm spell on the 7-8th) before warm conditions finished out the month with temperatures generally in the mid twenties. Overall, the month finished about a degree above normal at my site, and exactly normal (mean 12.0) at Winnipeg aiport. The highest temperature for the month was a 29C reading on the 23rd, however readings as high as 34C were recorded just south of Winnipeg in Emerson on the 28th. There were 4 official days with frost at my site with the last occurrence of frost on the morning of the 21st over the Victoria Day weekend. Precipitation was below normal for the month with generally light rainfalls scattered throughout the month (as well as a trace of snowflurries on the 4th) The highest daily rainfall at my site was only 8 mm on the 2nd with a monthly total of 42 mm, some 17 mm below normal. However, some parts of the city received much heavier amounts due to localized thunderstorms that passed through the city. For example, thunderstorms on the 7th and 9th each dropped over 30 mm of rain over parts of southern Winnipeg, but my site escaped the bulk of the heaviest rain. There were 6 thunderstorms at my site during the month, including one with pea size hail on the 9th. The event of the month was the severe thunderstorms that barrelled through Southern Manitoba on the 28th, as very hot and humid air lay just to the south along the U.S. border. In Winnipeg, a balmy start to the day with temperatures of 24C by 9:30 am came crashing down as thunderstorms brought high winds and much cooler air into the city from the west. Temperatures plunged 10 degrees from 24C to 14C between 9:45 and 10:15 am, with northwest winds gusting over 80 km/h at the airport. The thunderstorm temporarily suspended the annual Teddy Bear's picnic at Assiniboine Park, as hundreds of kids, parents and volunteers had to seek shelter from the high winds and lightning. Further east, there was considerable wind damage around Pinawa/Lac Du Bonnet areas with downed trees and power lines. Overall, a variable month with a warm finish.
