Mild start then variable and dry.. The mild weather in December continued through the first 10 days of January including a record high of +5C on the 3rd. The mild weather pattern however changed abruptly by the 11th when northerly winds brought in a much colder airmass across the Prairies, in behind a strong storm system that brought severe blizzard conditions to Saskatoon and central Saskatchewan. That brought an end to 5 consecutive weeks of above normal temperatures over Winnipeg, with temperatures falling to -37 at the airport by the 12th. The second half of the month featured alternate periods of cool and mild spells, with no drastic temperature extremes. Overall, January averaged above normal temperature wise, thanks in large part to the very mild beginning, with a monthly average of -14.4C at my site (-16c at the YWG airport) compared to the "normal" January average of -17.8C. The weather was also very quiet precipitation wise with very little snow falling all month. Total snowfall was about 15 cm over 8 days, with no single fall of more than 4 cm. This compares with an average January snowfall of about 23 cm. In fact, other than the large 30 cm snowfall at the end of December, snowfall has been quite meager over Winnipeg over the past couple of months, with only 1 major snowfall since the start of December. Total snowfall at my site in Charleswood since October 1st is now up to 94 cm as of the end of January, compared with a normal of 69 cm by this point. All in all, a mild and tame January with a mid month cold spell.
