Variable month with a mild wet finish.. March 2007 lived up to the reputation usually associated with March.. with large temperature swings and variable weather as springtime airmasses clash with lingering winter cold for control. This was especially evident in the first 2-3 weeks of the month when mild spells of above freezing temperatures would be quickly followed by periods of -15 to -20 degree weather. The official arrival of spring on the 20th heralded the arrival of a milder weather pattern for the last 10 days of the month with temperatures above freezing every day along with wet and foggy conditions at times. The mild weather allowed for a rapid snowmelt with a 30 cm snowpack on the 24th virtually gone by the 28th, about a week earlier than last year. Temperatures for the month finished about 1.5 degrees above normal at my site, thanks to the mild finish. Temperatures ranged from a low of -26C on the 5th to +9.5C on the 27th. Precipitation for the month was above normal (total precipitation of 32 mm vs normal 21 mm) mainly due to some heavy rain late in the month. Up to then, precipitation was meager with only about 7 cm of snow recorded during the month. Heavy rain on the night of the 28-29th produced about 18 mm of rain at my site leading to a month end rainfall total of 24 mm, some 17 mm above normal. The rainfall and rapid snowmelt however did not produce any concern for significant flooding on the Red River, thanks to very dry soil conditions left over from last years record dry growing season. All in all.. a typically variable month with a mild wet finish.
