MILD SECOND HALF.. SNOWY OVERALL Cold conditions that moved in the latter part of November persisted into the first half of December with below normal temperatures into mid month. The weather pattern changed for the second half of December to a milder than normal regime that continued into the end of the month. As a result, the month averaged close to normal at my location, and about 1 degree below normal at Winnipeg airport. Temperatures below -20C were common in the first half of the month, but stayed above the -20C mark after the 16th. Snowfall was above average with about 41 cm at my location (note that snowfall after the 20th was estimated at my location) Average December snowfall in Winnipeg is about 20 cm so snowfall was double the monthly average. This was mainly due to 4 systems during the month that dumped between 5 and 10 cm of snow to the Winnipeg area (but higher amounts south or west of the city) The worst storm was on the 4th when an Alberta clipper brought heavy snow over southern and southwest MB, with up to 20 cm in Brandon. Another clipper on the 12-13th brought about 5-10 cm of snow along with strong northerly winds that created near-blizzard conditions over the Red River valley and closed several highways.
