Cool and dry.. April 2008 was generally a dry and cool month across southern MB with little in the way of major weather systems or precipitation. At Winnipeg airport, the month ended up with about 18 mm of melted precipitation, just over half the April average of 32 mm. At my site, the month ended up with 18 mm of rain and 6 cm of snow. The bulk of the precipitation came with two events late in the month.. a rainfall of 7-9 mm on the 21st, and then another 7-9 mm of mixed rain, freezing rain and snow during a late season winter storm on the 24th. That system produced 10-20 cm of snow west and north of Winnipeg (including Portage), with 10-20 mm of rain and freezing rain to the south and east of the city (e.g Steinbach). That was followed two days later by another snowfall in the southeast corner of the province with 15-25 cm in the Sprague/Whiteshell areas on the 26th. In fact, the main story this April was the fact that Winnipeg and the Red River valley dodged several late season winter storms that brought significant and record breaking snowfalls to parts of the Dakotas and northern Minnesota during the month. With the main storm track to our south, Winnipeg stayed generally on the cool side during April, with the mean monthly temperature of 3.3C at Winnipeg airport about 0.7C below the normal April average of 4.0C (mean of 3.8C at my site) The nicest stretch of weather during the month was from the 13th to 20th which featured sunny skies and mild temperatures, including the months only two 20C plus days.. on the 18th and 19th. Temperatures at my site ranged from a high of 20.9C on the 19th to a low of -13.6C on the 5th. Snowcover was generally gone by April 7th.. about a week or so later than last year. All in all.. a dry and cool month, but it could have been a lot worse.
