ICE STORM HIGHLIGHTS SEASONABLY COLD MONTH.. Feb 2009 was a seasonably cold month, finishing just a degree below normal at the Winnipeg airport site (-14.6C vs -13.6C) The month was characterized by generally near to colder than normal weather, except for a mild spell between the 5th and 11th that was highlighted by an unseasonable rain and ice storm on the 9th. That event dropped 15 mm of rain and ice on Winnipeg, the earliest occurrence of that much rain in Winnipeg since records began in 1872. The rain started off as several hours of freezing rain during the early morning of the 9th, making for treacherous highway conditions due to a coating of ice that turned roads into skating rinks. Many highways were closed due to hundreds of vehicles that slid off roadways, making this one of the worst ice storms in recent memory in the Winnipeg area. Snowfall for the month was meager at 14 cm, with 8 cm falling in a few hours on the 24th. Overall, precipitation for the month was above normal (29.0 mm vs 14 mm) mainly due to the rainfall event on the 9th. This combined with above avarge snowpack south of the border, and a deep frost has raised the possibility of major flooding on the Red River this spring. February 2009 capped off a colder than normal winter in Winnipeg and southern MB. The 3 month period of Dec-Jan-Feb finished with an average temperature of -18.0C, the coldest winter since 1995-96 (-18.1C) and the third coldest in 30 years. However, it failed to rank in the top 25 coldest of all time since 1872. Overall, a seasonably cold month to finish a colder than normal winter..
