March can be a long and draining month over southern Manitoba as winter often brings a few parting shots of cold and snow before it relaxes its grip in April. But this year, March was anything but typical as mild springlike weather moved in by the second week and persisted through the month. The resulting monthly mean of -0.6C at Winnipeg airport was over 5C above normal, and made this March the 5th warmest March since records began in 1872. It was also the warmest March since 2000 when an average of -0.1C was recorded. (warmest March was in 1878 at +1.6C) There were at least 5 days in the double digits with a monthly maximum of 18C late in the month. The month was notable for an unusual lack of snow.. only 1 day of measurable snow at Winnipeg airport with 2 cm falling on the 24th (1.6 cm at my site) Normally, March sees about 16 cm for the month, with some of the city's heaviest snowstorms occurring during March. This month was the 5th least snowy March on record, behind 1946 (0.8 cm), 1938 (1.0 cm), 1939 (1.5cm), and 1961 (1.5 cm). The lack of cold and snow, plus a 7 day stretch of above zero weather from the 9th through the 15th (even at night) allowed a snowpack of 30 cm to disappear within a week. Snowcover was essentially gone by the 16th, almost a full month earlier than last year. Total snowfall since October 1st in Winnipeg was 78 cm as of April 1st (as measured at my site.. Winnipeg airport no longer takes snowfall measurements). Normally we would see 99 cm by April 1st so we're a good 20 cm below average. The winter seemed even shorter since November had only a meager 1.4 cm of snow, with 1.6 cm in March. So winter was only about 3 months this year.. a pleasant change form last year's winter which lasted well into April. The mild weather and lack of snow was a blessing for residents of the Red River valley since flooding on the Red was minimal. Things could have been a lot worse given the deep snowpack and wet antecedent soil conditions in North Dakota this winter which gave the potential for a much higher crest. Overall a mild and snowfree month that felt more like April than March.
