After a very dry April with no rain for almost 4 weeks, things turned around dramatically in May over southern Manitoba with a series of heavy rainstorms. The main event was a late month deluge between the 28th and 30th when heavy thunderstorms produced 100-150 mm of rain across Winnipeg and much of the Red River valley. At Winnipeg airport, the monthly precipitation total of 160 mm made it the third wettest May in the city in 138 years of records, second only to 1977 (177.7 mm) and 1911 (162.1 mm) Normal May rainfall is 59 mm. The 160 mm monthly total at the airport also made this the wettest month in Winnipeg in 10 years, going back to June 2000 (177.4 mm) Rainfall was even heavier in other parts of the city, with 186 mm at my site in Charleswood, and over 200 mm in eastern sections of the city which were hit by over 100 mm of rain on the 29th alone. That storm caused many problems across Winnipeg and the Red River valley with hundreds of flooded basements, flooded underpasses, and rising river levels. The rain forced officials to open the Red River valley floodway once again to help reduce flooding problems in Winnipeg. The heavy rain has also caused concerns for farmers who were able to get crops in early this year due to favourable spring weather. Temperature wise, the month averaged right on normal with a monthly mean of 12.1C at the airport. The month however was divided between a cool wet start, a warm dry middle, then a variable wet finish. The nicest stretch of weather was between the 14th and 21st, when summerlike conditions dominated through the period with sunshine and temperatures in the mid to high twenties. The month’s warmest reading of 29.2C was recorded during this stretch on the 19th. Unsettled weather moved in by the May 24 weekend setting the stage for the wild wet finish from the 28th to 30th. All in all, a variable month with a wet finish.
