The heavy rains of August continued into much of September, resulting in yet another wetter than normal month for Winnipeg and the Red River valley. At Winnipeg airport, rainfall totalled 93 mm in September, almost twice the monthly average of 52 mm, and putting the growing season rainfall since April 1st to 582.5 mm, the wettest April- September period since 1977 (594.3 mm) and the second wettest April-September precip total in Winnipeg since records began in 1873. The high total in September was mainly the result of three soaking rainstorms during the month where rainfalls of 30-60 mm were widespread across the RRV, with storm totals up to 100 mm in some localities. In Winnipeg, montly totals of 100-120 mm were observed over southern and eastern parts of the city, including at my site in Charleswood. The late season wetness delayed the fall harvest with many fields and crops too wet to work with. A pattern change to sunny, drier and warmer weather finally arrived at the end of the month, but it will take a good 2-3 weeks of dry sunny conditions to start reducing ground moisture levels. Even then, it is unlikely soil conditions will dry out much before the winter freezeup which puts the Red River valley at risk for serious flooding next spring depending on how much snow we get this winter. The Forks walkway was under water in October, something that has not happened since it opened over 10 years ago. Temperature wise, the month averaged about 1 degree below normal at YWG airport (11.4C vs 12.3C normal) with generally cooler than normal weather for the first 23 days of the month. Only 2 days above 20C were recorded before the 26th, with the monthly maximum of 23C on the 26th. This was a far cry from September 2009 which registered a record 19 days above 25C during the city's warmest September on record. Frost was reported on the morning of the 19th, ending the growing season at Winnipeg which began early this year on May 10th. All in all.. a cool wet month with a hopeful trend to drier warmer weather by the end..
