Winnipeg To See A Windy Return to Seasonably Warm Conditions

A surge of mild Pacific air will bring pleasant fall conditions back to Winnipeg, but it will get rather windy as it does so.

It will be a beautiful start to the week for late-October in Winnipeg today. A lingering ridge of high pressure will bring the city plenty of sunshine as temperatures climb to a high near 9 °C. As the warm air slowly approaches from the west, winds will begin to pick up over the Red River Valley. Winnipeg should see southeasterlies strengthen to 30 gusting 50 km/h by the afternoon. Those winds will continue tonight as the warm air pushes east and cloudier conditions move into the region. The city will see a low near +4 °C.

The winds in the Red River Valley will ratchet up to around 50 gusting 70 km/h on Tuesday as the clouds thicken up. Temperatures will be seasonably mild with a high near 11 °C. Some rain will likely move through western Manitoba, but here in the Red River Valley it should stay dry through the day. It will be cloudy on Tuesday night in Winnipeg with a mild low near 7 °C.

RDPS 10m AGL Wind Forecast valid 18Z Tuesday October 26, 2021
Strong southeasterly winds will develop over southern Manitoba on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, an area of rain will push out of the Dakotas into southeastern Manitoba. It’s likely that a portion of the Red River Valley will get clipped by this system. Winnipeg will also see a chance of showers with this system, but with the rain mainly moving by to the east, it may be a miss or just a glancing shot. Daytime highs will again climb to around 10 °C with southerly winds of 20–30 km/h. The rain will move out evening, leaving behind gradually clearing skies and a low near +2 °C.

Long Range Outlook

Mild conditions will continue through the second half of the work week with more sunshine. Another disturbance will move through on Saturday and bring a chance of showers with it. Behind that, northwesterly winds will usher a more seasonal air mass back into the region for the following week.

Today’s seasonal daytime high in Winnipeg is 6 °C while the seasonal overnight low is -3 °C.

Seasonal Weekend Conditions

Winnipeg will see the seasonal conditions over the region continue through the weekend.

The weather will be slow to change in Winnipeg as a slow-moving ridge combines with another push of cooler air from the north. Daytime highs in the city will hover around the 6 or 7 °C mark for the next few days with lows dipping below freezing each night.

Skies will be variably cloudy over the coming days between a combination of small bands of lake effect stratus and a more organized area of cloud slumping southwards. The forecast has no rain or snow, though, with dry conditions continuing through the weekend.

RDPS 2m Temperature Forecast valid Sunday October 24, 2021
Cool nights will continue through the weekend with morning lows as cool as the mid-minus single digits.

Winds will also stay light out of the north, shifting easterly by Sunday, thanks to the slow-moving area of high pressure over the province. Breezier conditions may develop late Sunday into Monday as an area of low pressure starts pushing towards the province.

Long Range Outlook

Temperatures will shift into a seasonably mild pattern next week as the high over low block over the central Arctic collapses, allowing milder Pacific air to spill eastwards across the Prairies. Highs will shift back itno the low teens with lows climbing back above freezing. Some rain showers may be possible on Tuesday and Wednesday while the rest of the week looks dry.

Today’s seasonal daytime high in Winnipeg is 8 °C while the seasonal overnight low is -2 °C.

Cooler Weather Ahead

After a blustery Tuesday, notably cooler temperatures are settling over southern Manitoba.

It’s finally time to get the heavier sweaters and jackets out; fall has arrived in Winnipeg. A much cooler air mass has settled into the region and will stick around for the remainder of the week.

The wind seen yesterday will taper off over the coming days as an Arctic high moves into the region; the northerlies will pick up into the 20–30 km/h range today, then ease to light for both Thursday and Friday. Daytime highs will hover close to the 7 °C mark while overnight lows dip below freezing.

RDPS 2m Temperature Forecast valid 09Z Thursday October 21, 2021
Temperatures will fall well below freezing across the eastern Prairies on Wednesday night.

The city will see generally sunny conditions mix with more cloud as the week progresses, with the caveat that there’s some room for the forecast to go a bit wrong if more low cloud spreads off the lakes than expected.

Long Range Outlook

Windier conditions will develop over the weekend as slightly warmer air attempts to move into the region, but more cloud will also spread into the weekend. Some rain showers are possible to start off next week, as temperatures climb into the low to mid-teens. Forecasts show the sun returning mid-week with seasonably warm conditions.

Today’s seasonal daytime high in Winnipeg is 9 °C while the seasonal overnight low is -2 °C.

Cold Front Brings Return of Seasonal Temperatures

A cold front sweeping across the Prairies will bring seasonal temperatures back to southern Manitoba after one more mild day.

It will be another mild day today in Winnipeg with a high near 21 °C as southerly winds continue to push warmer air north. Those winds will be breezy at around 30 gusting 50 km/h midday into the afternoon. The upper ridging over the region will continue to keep skies mainly sunny.

Things will change tonight, though, as a low crosses the province. A cold front will sweep southeastwards across the region overnight, ushering in a more seasonal air mass. Winnipeg will see the cloud cover increase overnight with temperatures dipping to around 6 °C. Those southerly winds will taper off overnight, then pick up out of the north to 30 km/h by Tuesday morning.

RDPS 2m Temperature Forecast valid 03Z Tuesday October 19, 2021
A cold front will sweep through southern Manitoba on Monday evening.

For the rest of the week, a broad area of high pressure will slowly settle into Manitoba. For Tuesday and Wednesday, it will bring northerly winds to the region and send temperatures back to near-seasonal values. It will be quite windy on Tuesday with northerly winds up to 40 gusting 60 km/h, but Wednesday will see those winds ease into the 20–30 km/h range. A cloudier start on Tuesday will see clearing later in the day. Wednesday should bring fairly sunny conditions save for any low cloud that streams off of Lake Manitoba and Lake Winnipeg.

Winnipeg will likely see frost and/or hard freezes beginning Tuesday night for the rest of the week. That’s not unusually with a seasonal low near -2 °C, but the city has managed to avoid it often so far this fall.

Long Range Outlook

Temperatures will cool to slightly below seasonal temperatures for the second half of the week with highs in the mid-single digits. Overnight lows will have at or just below seasonal values as well. Conditions will stay dry, but there is a chance for some lake-effect precipitation at the end of the week.

Today’s seasonal daytime high in Winnipeg is 9 °C while the seasonal overnight low is -2 °C.
