Dry, Hot Weather Ahead

Summer heat arrives this week for Winnipeg with a prolonged stretch of hot, dry weather.

The weather driver for Winnipeg this week will be a potent upper-level high that is currently situated over British Columbia. This feature is responsible for a dangerous, record-setting heat wave over the region right now. In fact, yesterday the town of Lytton, B.C. set a new record for hottest temperature recorded in all of Canada at 46.6 °C, beating out the previous record of 45.0 °C set in both Yellow Grass and Midale, SK on July 5, 1937. And records aren’t just falling in British Columbia, they’re being smashed by 5–10 °C.

This feature will slowly drift eastwards this week, gradually weakening as it pushes across the Prairies. But it will continue to bring several days of record-shattering heat to British Columbia and Alberta.

RDPS 2m Temperature Forecast valid 21Z Wednesday June 30, 2021
Daytime highs will reach around 30 °C in Winnipeg mid-week. Note the temperatures in excess of 40 °C forecast for northern Alberta.

Winnipeg will see daytime highs climb to around 30 °C over the coming days with lows increasing into the upper teens. The city will see plenty of sunshine over the next few days with just a few clouds around. Winds will pick up out of the north to around 20 km/h today, then ease tonight and stay light over the next couple days. As mentioned at the top, no notable precipitation is in the forecast. There is a slight chance that a few showers may move through overnight Tuesday or very early Wednesday morning, but it doesn’t look particularly likely at this point.

Long Range Outlook

The rest of the week will be more of the same with temperatures increasing further. Highs should reach the mid-30s by the weekend with overnight lows warming to around 20 °C. No precipitation is expected through the second half of the week.

Today’s seasonal daytime high in Winnipeg is 25 °C while the seasonal overnight low is 12 °C.

Beautiful Summer Weekend Ahead

Winnipeg will see beautiful summer weather this weekend.

The next few days will bring seasonably mild temperatures to Winnipeg as a major upper high gradually pushes into the western Prairies. This feature will bring what will likely be a record-shattering heat wave to portions of western Canada and the western United States. That heat will take longer to reach Manitoba, though, leaving the province with generally seasonable late June conditions.

A weak ridge extending across the southern Prairies will help keep winds light out of the southwest today. Winnipeg should see partly cloudy skies for much of the day with a high near 27 °C. The city will see clear skies tonight with light winds and a low near 15 °C.

RDPS 2m Temperature Forecast valid 21Z Friday June 25, 2021
Much of the Prairies will see mild daytime highs in the upper 20s today.

On Saturday, one last upper trough will rotate into southern Manitoba, pivoting around the broad Arctic vortex over Hudson Bay. It will bring mixed skies to the region midday into the afternoon along with a chance of showers.

There may be a chance for isolated thunderstorms, but both energy and wind shear will be in short supply. This means that if any thunderstorms are able to develop, they will likely be short-lived and won’t pose any severe weather threat. Winds will pick up out of the west-northwest for the afternoon at 20–30 km/h. Temperatures will still be warm with a high near 26 °C. Winnipeg will se a low near 13 °C under mostly clear skies on Saturday night.

Sunny skies return for Sunday with temperatures climbing once again to a high near 26 °C. Winds will be light out of the north through the day. A few showers will move through the province on Sunday, but there is strong agreement that they’ll stay west of the Red River Valley and move through the Parkland into southwestern Manitoba.

Skies will stay mostly clear on Sunday night with a low near 15 °C.

Long Range Outlook

The upper high building over western Canada will slowly push eastwards into the Prairies over the coming week. This will result in a gradual increase in temperatures next week with highs increasing into the low 30s. The city should see fairly sunny conditions, however the occasional chance for showers can’t be ruled out.

Some forecast models are suggesting that a cutoff low will develop over the Northern Plains of the United States. If this happened, then there is the potential that a high over low block could develop. These are generally very stable patterns, and could result in a prolonged period of hot, dry weather over the region.

Today’s seasonal daytime high in Winnipeg is 25 °C while the seasonal overnight low is 12 °C.

Warm Weather Ahead

Warm summer weather will continue through the weekend in Winnipeg.

Summer heat returns to southern Manitoba with highs in the low 30s today. Winnipeg will see temperatures climb to a high near 30 °C before a cold front begins slumping into the region. As the front moves in this afternoon, the city will see increasing cloud cover with a good chance of showers. There will also be a chance for a few thunderstorms afternoon with a small chance of a marginally severe thunderstorm. The primary threats from any thunderstorms that develop would be damaging hail and/or damaging wind gusts. The showers and thunderstorms will push off into northwestern Ontario this evening.

The city will see a breezy start to the day with southerly winds of 30 gusting 50 km/h. The winds will ease midday as the cold front approaches, then pick up out of the northwest to 30 gusting 50 km/h this evening. Skies will clear out with easing winds overnight as temperatures head to a low near 13 °C.

Hot weather will push back into southern Manitoba today with highs in the low 30s along and south of the Trans-Canada Highway.

Winnipeg will see a quieter day on Thursday with sunshine in the morning and a few clouds in the afternoon. Temperatures will climb to a high near 27 °C with a northwest breeze around 20 km/h. Heading into the evening, an upper-level disturbance tracking along the international border will spread more cloud into the region. Showers will push into southwestern Manitoba in the evening, then onwards towards the Red River Valley. There will be a chance for Winnipeg to see some rain from this overnight, but the rain may end up slumping a bit further south and missing the city.

Temperatures will head to a low near 15 °C on Thursday night.

On Friday, a broad ridge of high pressure will bring plenty of sun to the region. Temperatures will again climb to a high near 27 °C with light winds. More cloud will push into the region on Friday night ahead of another disturbance moving into the region from the northwest. Temperatures will head to a low near 16 °C overnight.

Long Range Outlook

Warm weather will continue through the weekend in Winnipeg with highs in the upper 20s and lows in the mid-teens. The city will likely see mixed skies on Saturday with a chance of showers or thunderstorms later in the day, while Sunday should bring more sun back to the region. A potent upper high building into the Prairies next week will bring an extended period of sunny weather with highs in the upper 20s or low 30s.

Today’s seasonal daytime high in Winnipeg is 24 °C while the seasonal overnight low is 12 °C.

Cool Monday, Then Warming Up for Winnipeg

It will be a cool start to the week in Winnipeg, but summer heat will quickly build back into the region this week.

Southern Manitoba will continue to see cooler weather today thanks to a broad vortex over Hudson Bay. It has brought a northerly flow the province and sent a pipeline of Arctic air southwards over the eastern Prairies. The seasonably cool temperatures will stick around today, supported by a northwest wind near 30 km/h. Winnipeg will likely start the day with some sunshine, but skies will become mixed through the morning. There will be a small chance of some midday showers today as the winds shift the Lake Manitoba streamers towards the city. Temperatures will reach a high near 17 °C. A few clouds will linger tonight as winds ease and temperatures drop to a low near 6 °C.

Seasonal temperatures will return to southern Manitoba on Tuesday an upper ridge pushes eastwards across the Prairies. A weak ridge will bring sunny skies to the Red River Valley with a high near 25 °C in Winnipeg. Winds will be light out of the southwest at 15–25 km/h. A warm front will push across southern Manitoba on Tuesday night, bringing a few clouds to Winnipeg with a mild low near 16 °C. Winds will strengthen out of the south overnight as well, increasing into the 30–40 km/h range by Wednesday morning.

RDPS 2m Temperature Forecast valid 21Z Wednesday June 23, 2021
The cooler start to the week will quickly give way to summertime heat by Wednesday.

The heat will be back on Wednesday with temperatures climbing to a high near 31 °C. Those moderate southerly winds will ease midday as a trough of low pressure moves into the Red River Valley. Winds look to switch to westerly at 20–30 km/h for the afternoon with a few clouds. A cold front pushing into the region later in the day will bring a chance of showers or thunderstorms to Winnipeg. Any storms would have limited energy to work with, but the winds will be favourable to help organize any thunderstorms that develop. The forecasted environment would suggest that some scattered thunderstorms are possible with a risk of isolated marginally severe storms.

Everything will settle down on Wednesday night with a low near 15 °C under mixed skies.

Long Range Outlook

Winnipeg should see near-seasonal temperatures through the rest of the work week, followed by a return of hotter conditions for the weekend into next week. Forecasts show little precipitation ahead with mainly sunny conditions this weekend into next week.

Today’s seasonal daytime high in Winnipeg is 24 °C while the seasonal overnight low is 12 °C.
