Warm Weather With Mixed Skies

Winnipeg will see warm weather continue this week with variable cloudiness over the coming days.

The city will see a mild start to the day with temperatures quickly warming to the high near 14 °C through the morning. By midday, a cold front will begin to sweep across the Red River Valley. This will bring increasing cloudiness and a low chance of rain showers as it passes. Behind the front, moderate northwest winds of 30–40 km/h will push into the Red River Vally for the afternoon with temperatures cooling slightly. The cloud cover will push out later in the day as an area of high pressure builds into the region. Winnipeg will see temperatures dip to a low near -2 °C tonight under clear skies and light north winds.

Winnipeg will see Monday’s warmest temperatures midday before a cold front moves through the region.

On Tuesday, a broad area of high pressure will work across the region. Temperatures will still stay mild as the strengthening April sun warms the snow-free ground in Winnipeg and the Red River Valley. The city should see a high near 13 °C with light north winds. The high will also keep skies sunny right through the day. Skies will stay clear on Tuesday night with a low near the freezing mark.

On Wednesday, a pair of low pressure systems will begin to impact the region. The first will be over the United States and will spread cloud and precipitation across southeastern Manitoba into northwestern Ontario. This system will stay southeast of Winnipeg and area, only spreading some partly cloudy skies this far west or north. Winnipeg will see a high temperature near 16°C (or perhaps a degree or two cooler if it ends up cloudier). The second low will begin pushing into Saskatchewan through the day and start building warmer weather into the region. This low will spread some cloud cover into the region overnight as temperatures head to a low near +2 °C.

Long Range Outlook

A more unsettled pattern will develop for the second half of the week, bringing cloudier conditions to Winnipeg. There is little agreement on the overall pattern progression, though, and whether or not the region will see any rain is still a big question. There will the potential for a few rain showers, but no particularly notable rainfall amounts are in the forecasts with only a few mm possible here and there. Temperatures will slowly ease back towards seasonal values into next week.

Mild Days Ahead for Winnipeg

A series of disturbances drifting eastwards across the Prairies will bring variable cloudiness and mild temperatures to Winnipeg this weekend.

The city will see a windy start to the day with a continuation of yesterday’s southerlies. Winds will gradually ease from 40 km/h this morning to around 20 km/h midday as a trough moves into southern Manitoba. This system will bring mixed skies to the region as temperatures climb to a high near 16 °C. The trough will move through this afternoon, ushering in northwest winds up to 30 gusting 50 km/h late this afternoon. Skies will clear tonight as temperatures head to a low near -2 °C with easing winds.

Moderate southerly winds will continue in the Red River Valley on Friday morning.

On Saturday, a broad area of high pressure will quickly slide through the province followed by a low collapsing from Saskatchewan into North Dakota. This will bring light easterly winds to the region with mixed skies. Temperatures will still be pleasant with a high near 13 °C. Partly cloudy skies will continue on Saturday night with a low near freezing.

On Sunday, the next significant low will begin working eastwards across Saskatchewan. This will bring mostly cloudy skies to southern Manitoba. A lingering surface ridge will keep winds light out of the east-northeast in Winnipeg with a high near 13 °C again. Temperatures will dip to around +4 °C on Sunday night with cloudier skies and a southeast wind near 20 km/h.

Long Range Outlook

Winnipeg will see variable cloudiness through the first half of the week followed by cloudier weather with a chance of showers for the latter half. Temperatures should stay mild right through the week with highs in the low to mid-teens.

Windy Weather Brings Spring Warmth Back To Winnipeg

Spring warmth will gradually return to Winnipeg over a couple windy days.

The city will see a cool but pleasant day today as a ridge moves across the province. Temperatures will climb to a seasonably cool -1 °C with light northwest winds. Skies will stay clear tonight with a low near -7 °C with southerly winds increasing into the 20–30 km/h range.

A broad area of low pressure will begin building across the Prairies on Thursday, bringing warmer weather and much windier conditions. Southerly winds will strengthen through the day into the 40–50 km/h range with temperatures climbing to around 10 °C. Skies will stay mainly sunny through the day, but a few clouds will likely drift through the region in the afternoon. Moderate southerlies will persist on Thursday night in the 30–40 km/h range. Temperatures will head to a low near +2 °C.

Spring warmth will arrive on Friday as a weak low crosses southern Manitoba. The southerly winds will gradually ease into the afternoon with temperatures climbing to a high near 16 °C. This low will bring mixed skies to the region, but it will be a dry system with no precipitation forecast. As the low passes, winds will pick back up out of the northwest in the 20–30 km/h range for the latter portion of the afternoon. Winds will ease in the evening with temperatures in Winnipeg heading to a low near -1 °C.

Long Range Outlook

Temperatures will stay mild this weekend with highs in the teens, but skies will become cloudier on Sunday as a deep upper trough begins to develop over western Canada. This will bring cloudier and weather into next week with the chance of rain showers across several days.

Spring Storm Brings Windy Temperature Rollercoaster to Southern Manitoba

A potent spring storm moving through the region will send temperatures soaring on Monday. As quickly as they climb, though, a potent cold front will bring strong winds that send them crashing down.

A strong spring storm will move across southern Manitoba today. This storm will bring heavy snow and blowing snow to the Parkland, Interlake and central Manitoba. Over southern Manitoba, things will stay a bit drier. Most areas along and south of the Trans-Canada Highway will stay dry through the day today. For these areas, including Winnipeg, the story will be the wild swings in temperature and the strong winds that will move into the region.

For Winnipeg, today will start off with moderate southerly winds near 30 gusting 50 km/h. With mixed skies through the day, the temperature will climb to a beautiful 17 °C with winds easing a bit in the afternoon. Conditions will quickly change later in the afternoon, though, as the first of a pair of cold fronts pushes through the region. Winds will strengthen out of the west-southwest into the 40–50 km/h range late in the day with increasing cloud. Temperatures will quickly fall through the evening, reaching freezing by 10 or 11 PM.

Strong to severe northwest winds will move through southern Manitoba on Monday night.

A second cold front will sweep through overnight, shifting the winds to the northwest and strengthening even further into the 50–60 km/h range. This second front will bring some light snow across southern Manitoba with it. Temperatures will continue to fall to a low near -9 °C by Tuesday morning, a whopping 26 °C drop from Monday’s forecast high.

Moderate northwest winds will continue across the Red River Valley on Tuesday near 40 gusting 60 km/h. Much of the day will be cloudy with light snow gradually tapering off. It will be a seasonably cold day with a high in Winnipeg near -6 °C. Skies will clear overnight as a ridge pushes into the region with winds gradually easing and a cold low near -14 °C.

Wednesday will be a cool and sunny day as a ridge moves across the region. Winnipeg will see a high near the freezing mark with light winds. Warmer air will begin moving in on Wednesday night with a low near -5 °C.

Long Range Outlook

Upper ridging will build across the Prairies for the latter half of the week and the weekend. This will bring generally sunny conditions and mild temperatures. Winnipeg will likely see daytime highs around the mid-teens beginning Thursday and persisting into next week. A large upper trough moving onshore to start next week may bring cloudier conditions to the region with a chance of rain.
