Mild Weather Continues

Winnipeg will continue to see seasonably mild and windy weather this weekend.

Temperatures will climb into the mid-teens quickly this morning, but a cold front passing midday will cap the high near 16 °C. Behind the front, breezy northwest winds up to 40 gusting 60 km/h will develop for the afternoon hours. Although the front will bring some clouds to the region, there will be plenty of sun through most of the day.

The winds will taper off this evening as a ridge of high pressure builds in from the north. Winnipeg should see a low near +1 °C with partly cloudy skies.

Temperatures will be a bit cooler on Saturday as the ridge leaves the region. Winnipeg will see mostly sunny skies with a near-seasonal high around 13 °C. Winds will pick up out of the south in the afternoon to 30 gusting 50 km/h and then increase to 40 gusting 60 km/h overnight. These southerly winds will bring a surge of warm air northwards and the city will see a mild overnight low 10 °C.

The Red River Valley will see mild temperatures with daytime highs climbing into the low 20s on Sunday.

A low pressure system passing through on Sunday will bring mostly cloudy skies to the region for the day. Winds will continue out of the south at 30 to 40 km/h, continuing to tap into warmer air. This will send high temperatures to around 20 °C. There will be a little bit of instability in the region through the afternoon hours that may result in a few showers or thunderstorms. The chance is low in the Red River Valley and much more likely that the southeastern corner of the province.

Winds will shift to the southwest and ease to 20 km/h on Sunday night with mixed skies. Temperatures will still stay seasonably mild with a low near 8 °C.

Long Range Outlook

Temperatures will shift back towards seasonal values through the first half of next week. Many forecasts show cooler weather moving in for the second half of the week with daytime highs dipping into the 5–10 °C range. Dry weather is forecast to continue through much of the week.

Today’s seasonal daytime high in Winnipeg is 12 °C while the seasonal overnight low is 1 °C.

Summer Scorcher Leads to Unsettled Weather

The summer heat will gradually wane over the coming days as unsettled conditions move into the region.

A large upper ridge over the Prairies will bring another day of scorching weather to southern Manitoba. With blazing sunshine, Winnipeg will see temperatures soar to a high near 34 °C. Dew point temperatures will stay in the mid- to upper teens, producing humidex values near 40 through the afternoon.

Tonight, a low pressure system will slide across the province, dragging a cold front with it to the east. That will bring some cloudiness to the city overnight as temperatures dip to a low near 16 °C. Heading through the second half of the night, Winnipeg will see a low chance of showers or thunderstorms as the low moves into the Red River Valley.

Scorching hot summer temperatures will be in place across the southern Prairies today.

On Thursday, any chance of rain will come to an end in the morning as the low moves off to the east. Temperatures will quickly rise to a high near 32 °C with partly cloudy skies for the rest of the day. The winds will shift to the north for the afternoon behind a weak cold front that moves through the area. Temperatures will dip to a low near 16 °C on Thursday night with a few clouds.

On Friday, a shortwave moving eastwards will run along a warm front draped across southern Manitoba. Skies will be mixed to cloudy with a good chance of some showers or thunderstorms through the day. Winnipeg should see a high near 26 °C, but it will be sensitive to the exact placement of the warm front and how much sun manages to poke out. If it ends up a tad on the sunnier side, temperatures could climb as high as 30 °C. Some marginally severe thunderstorms may be possible and there is the potential for some training storms resulting in locally high rainfall accumulations in bands parallel to the warm front.

The unsettled conditions will clear out on Friday evening with temperatures dipping to a low near 17 °C.

Long Range Outlook

The weekend will bring more settled conditions back to the region with seasonably warm highs in the upper 20s. On Sunday, a weak disturbance passing through may bring the chance for thundershowers back to the region.

Today’s seasonal daytime high in Winnipeg is 24°C while the seasonal overnight low is 11°C.

Summer Heat Building Back In

Temperatures in Winnipeg will begin to climb back towards the 30s over the coming days.

A weakening trough of low pressure will move through Winnipeg today, bringing mild temperatures and light south winds. With partly cloudy skies, the city should see a high near 27 °C. Skies will clear for the night with a low near 16 °C.

On Thursday, a ridge of high pressure will lie draped across southern Manitoba and southeastern Saskatchewan. This will bring mainly sunny skies to Winnipeg with light southerly winds. Temperatures will be a bit warmer with a high near 29 °C, but humidity levels should still be comfortable. Thursday night should see a low near 17 °C.

GDPS 2m Temperature Forecast valid Saturday August 8, 2020
Hot summer weather will return to the Red River Valley on Friday.

Friday will be when the hot and humid weather settles back into the region. Winnipeg will see temperatures climb to a high near 32 °C and a breezy southerly wind will draw humid conditions northwards. By the end of the day, the dewpoint is forecast to reach almost 20 °C which would make for noticeably muggy conditions.

A cold front will push eastwards across the region on Friday evening into the night. It looks likely that it will support an area of showers and thunderstorms as it moves through.

Long Range Outlook

The weekend will bring more sunshine with a return to comfortable humidity levels. Both Saturday and Sunday will see high temperatures in the upper 20s.

Today’s seasonal daytime high in Winnipeg is 26°C while the seasonal overnight low is 13°C.

Sweltering Summer Heat Continues

Hot, humid weather continues in Winnipeg this week with a chance of thunderstorms on Wednesday.

The upper ridge that has brought a hot and humid air mass to the province isn’t going anywhere any time soon. As a result, neither will the heat. Temperatures over the next couple days will continue to climb into the low 30s during the day and dip to the low 20s at night. Along with this heat, dew points in the low 20s will produce humid conditions with humidex values climbing towards 40.

Winnipeg will see a bit of cloud over the next couple days with winds out of the southeast at 20 to 30 km/h.

RDPS 2m Temperature Forecast valid 21Z Tuesday June 30, 2020
Hot, humid conditions will continue over southern Manitoba on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, a “cold” front will push across the region, bringing more cloud and some showers with the risk of a thunderstorm. Given the hot and humid air mass in place, there will likely be a risk for severe thunderstorms in the region. What exactly it will look like, though, will depend significantly on the evolution of the system over the next two days as it brings more rounds of severe thunderstorms to southeastern Saskatchewan and southwest Manitoba.

Long Range Outlook

Temperatures will cool slightly behind the cool front on Wednesday, but the heat quickly returns for Friday into the weekend. Highs will climb back into the low 30s with humidity returning to the region. It appears that a reprieve from the heat (or at least the humidity) is likely after the weekend.

Stay safe and enjoy the summer weather as best you can!

Today’s seasonal daytime high in Winnipeg is 25°C while the seasonal overnight low is 13°C.
