Cooler Weather Ahead

Temperatures will slowly drop through the week in Winnipeg as a colder air mass gradually builds into the region.

Winnipeg will see just two more days of near-seasonal temperatures before a pattern shift ushers northerly winds and an Arctic air mass into the region. In the wake of yesterday’s rain, Winnipeg will see mainly sunny skies today. Winds will pick up out of the west to 30 gusting 50 km/h as temperatures climb to a high near 14 °C.

The winds will ease tonight as temperatures dip to around +3 °C. A passing disturbance will bring some cloud to the region overnight. A few showers are possible closer to the U.S. border, but Winnipeg should stay dry through the night.

On Tuesday, westerly winds will strengthen early in the day, up to as high as 40 gusting 60 km/h across the region. Temperatures will reach a near-seasonal high of 12 °C under sunny skies. The wind will quickly die off this evening followed by a low near +3 °C. Skies should gradually cloud over through the night ahead of the next low pressure system approaching the province.

Northerly winds will begin ushering cooler air into southern Manitoba on Wednesday.

On Wednesday, a low pressure system will dive across North Dakota into Minnesota. In Winnipeg, this system will bring cloudy skies with a chance of rain showers. Winds will also pick up out of the north to 30 gusting 50 km/h in the afternoon. These northerly winds will keep things cooler with a high of only 8 °C. The cloud cover will start to break up overnight as winds ease to northwesterly at 20 km/h and temperatures dip to a low of -3 °C.

Long Range Outlook

Colder weather continues to push southwards through the rest of the week under mixed to cloudy skies. Temperatures will top out near 5 °C on Thursday and drop towards 2–3 °C by the end of the weekend. Overnight lows will hover in the -2 to -5 °C range. A few rain showers (or snow flurries!) may be possible heading through the weekend.

Cool Weather for the Weekend

A slow moving upper low over Manitoba will keep temperatures in Winnipeg cool with mixed to cloudy skies through the weekend.

Temperatures will stay seasonably cool right through the weekend for Winnipeg as a cold upper low slowly meanders across the province. Highs will hover around 20°C over the next few days with lows near 10°C. The city will also see a fair amount of cloud cover with mixed to cloudy skies.

Today will be the windiest day of the next few with southwest winds of 20 to 30 km/h in the afternoon. Saturday will bring light southerly winds, then they switch northerly for Sunday up to 30 km/h again.

A disturbance tracking through North Dakota will bring rain to southeastern Manitoba on Saturday.

Saturday will bring the only notable organized weather event over the next few days. A low pressure system moving through North Dakota will spread an area of rain across the southeastern Manitoba. The rain will develop midday and taper off through the evening and overnight periods. Regions under the main band of rain will see about 5 to 10 mm. Winnipeg will sit along the northwestern edge of the rain and could see a few hours of showers or, if it develops just a bit to the southeast, nothing but some clouds.

Some scattered showers are possible on Sunday, but will most likely occur over the Parkland and Interlake.

Long Range Outlook

Temperatures should return to seasonal values by the middle of next week with a bit more sunshine. For the second half of the week, Winnipeg should start seeing highs in the mid- to upper 20s again with comfortable humidity. No notable rain or severe weather threats appear in the forecasts through next week.

Near-Record Cold To Start The Week

Winnipeg will see temperatures over 10°C below normal continue to start the week with overnight lows dipping close to record values.

The cold weather continues as a potent, sprawling Arctic high builds into the province. Breezy northerly winds of 20 to 30 km/h will keep things cool again today with a high of 7°C. Temperatures will plummet back below zero tonight to a low near -7 or -8°C with light winds and clear skies. While not a record, it will get close to the record low of -10.0°C set in 1918.

Temperatures will rebound slightly Tuesday, but still stay well below seasonal values. Winnipeg will see a high near 11°C under mainly sunny skies. The wind will be light, which will help things feel a little nicer than the past few days. Temperatures will head back towards 0°C on Tuesday night with increasing cloud.

Rain will spread across southern Manitoba on Wednesday with many areas forecast to receive around 10 mm by the time it tapers off on Wednesday night.

On Wednesday, a warm front pushing into the region will spread rain eastwards across the Red River Valley. The wet weather will keep temperatures cool again with a high near 9°C with southeast winds of 20 to 30 km/h. The rain will taper off in the evening with event accumulations likely near to 10 mm. Temperatures will dip to a low near 5°C on Wednesday night with mostly cloudy skies and a chance of showers.

Long Range Outlook

The passage of Wednesday’s warm front will mark the start of a return towards seasonal temperatures. Once any remaining cloud and/or showers moves out on Thursday morning, temperatures will climb into the upper teens through the rest of the week. On the weekend, 20°C highs will be possible again! Winnipeg should see plenty of sun though the second half of the week.

Cold Weekend Ahead

While we often try to be optimistic about the forecast, there’s no getting around it. This weekend’s weather will be lousy.

A persistent vortex over eastern Canada combined with a stationary upper ridge over the west coast will keep Manitoba locked into a regime of cool temperatures.

Today will be the “nicest” day of the next few with sunny skies and a high near 9°C. This is almost 10°C below seasonal averages and it’s going to get even cooler yet. Winds will be out of the north at just 10 to 20 km/h. A low moving through Saskatchewan will spread cloud into southern Manitoba tonight as Winnipeg’s low dips to around -2°C.

Saturday will be a cloudy day in Winnipeg with northerly winds strengthening to 30 gusting 50 km/h. Conditions should stay dry in the Red River Valley with any rain showers or snow associated with the low moving out of Saskatchewan remaining over southwestern Manitoba. Temperatures in Winnipeg will climb to around 9°C, then to near -2°C tonight as the cloud begins to break up. The winds will ease this evening.

Sunday will bring mixed skies to Winnipeg with north winds increasing back to 30 gusting 50 km/h and a high near 6°C. Skies will clear out on Sunday night with a low near -6°C.

Long Range Outlook

Anyone hoping to see more seasonal, spring-like weather is going to need patience. The cool conditions will persist through much of next week. Temperatures should return to the teens by mid-week, then continue warming to seasonal values by the end of the week. No major precipitation events are in the forecast.
