Arctic High Brings More Cold Weather

An approaching Arctic ridge will send temperatures in Winnipeg plunging well below seasonal values once again.

Colder weather returns to Winnipeg today as an Arctic ridge begins building through the Prairies. Northwesterly winds near 30 km/h will keep temperatures much cooler than seasonal today; Winnipeg’s high temperature will struggle to just -6°C. The colder air will continue to filter into the region tonight, sending temperatures down to a low near -15°C. Morning cloud will give way to breaks of sunshine this afternoon. Winnipeg will see a chance of flurries through the afternoon into the early evening. Skies will gradually continue to clear overnight with winds shifting to westerly at 10 to 20 km/h.

The Arctic ridge will move through the Red River Valley on Saturday, bringing cool temperatures and sunny skies. Winnipeg will see a high of just -9°C with west-southwest winds of 15 to 25 km/h. Temperatures will drop to a low near -13°C on Saturday night with increasing cloudiness.

Sunday will bring fairly cloudy skies to the region, although once again sunny breaks will be possible through the afternoon. It will be another cool day with a high near -8°C and winds should be light through the day. Skies will remain mixed to mostly cloudy on Sunday night as temperatures drop to a low near -14°C.

Long Range Outlook

Next week should bring a return to seasonal temperatures by mid-week with variable cloudiness. No significant precipitation is forecast.

Cloudy Conditions Ahead With Seasonal Temperatures

Winnipeg will continue to see near-seasonal temperatures with mostly cloudy skies right through the remainder of the week.

Cooler conditions return to Winnipeg today in the wake of a cold front that moved through the region overnight. Northwesterly winds will begin the day near 30 km/h then gradually taper off through the afternoon, bringing a cooler air mass into the region that will limit daytime highs to around +3°C. Skies will remain cloudy through the day with just a slight chance of some rain showers or light flurries. Conditions should be relatively pleasant this evening for any kids out for Halloween with cloudy skies and temperatures near 2 or 3°C. Overnight, temperatures will head to a low near -2°C under mainly cloudy skies.

Another low pressure system will slide across southwestern Manitoba on Thursday. Any organized precipitation with this system should remain west of the Red River Valley, leaving Winnipeg with mostly cloudy skies and a high near +4°C. Winds will remain light and easterly through the day. More cloud is on the way for Thursday night with a low near -2°C.

Would you believe that Friday will bring…more cloud? The stagnant flow over the region will ensure that mostly cloudy skies remain in place over Winnipeg for yet another day. Temperatures will continue in line with the days before: a high near +3°C and a low on Friday night near -2°C.

Long Range Outlook

The weekend looks to remain fairly cloudy in Winnipeg. No organized precipitation is in the forecast and near-seasonal temperatures are expected both Saturday and Sunday. Cloudy weather continues into next week, with an increasing chance of rain or snow on Tuesday into Wednesday.

Winnipeg Set to See Warmest Temperatures Since Mid-September

A low pressure system tracking along the 60th parallel will spread a substantially warmer air mass across southern Manitoba on Thursday.

Today will be another cool day as a ridge of high pressure tracks across the province. Winnipeg will see a high temperature near 5°C with light winds and mainly sunny skies. Tonight, winds should pick up out of the south to around 20-30 km/h ahead of warmer air working in from the west. Some more cloud will push into the region as temperatures head to a low near +3°C.

Thursday will bring the warmest temperatures in a month to Winnipeg. Breezy southwesterly winds of 20 to 30 km/h will remain in place all day as temperatures climb to a high near 17°C! After the last month of below-seasonal temperatures this might seem downright hot to some, but it won’t be anywhere near the record high of 22.8°C set in 1914. Winds will diminish in the evening with a bit of cloud cover working across the region. Temperatures will dip to a low near 5°C.

Friday will bring mostly cloudy skies as a moderate northwesterly wind of 30 to 40 km/h pushes the warmest temperatures out of the region. Winnipeg will see a near-seasonal high of 9°C. The day should remain dry, however by evening there will be a chance of showers or flurries slumping southwards out of the Interlake. Temperatures will head to a low near -1°C on Friday night.

Long Range Outlook

It appears that Saturday will bring cooler temperatures back to Winnipeg with highs in the low single digits with mixed skies. Sunday should bring more sunshine back to the region with temperatures returning to seasonal values. Much of the next week looks to seasonal to slightly below-seasonal temperatures and dry conditions with a good chance of plenty of sunshine. The slightly warmer, sunnier, and drier weather will be welcome news to some farmers who really need their fields to dry.

Seasonably Pleasant Weather Ahead

Winnipeg will see near-seasonal temperatures and variable cloudiness through the remainder of the work week.

Winnipeg’s cool start to the day will continue right through as a ridge of high pressure moves through the area. Under sunny skies, the city will see temperatures climb to a below-seasonal high near 19°C. It will be another cool night with temperatures dipping down to a low near 4 or 5 °C. It doesn’t look too likely, but there will undoubtedly be a small chance for isolated patches of frost outside the city, particularly to the southeast.

Thursday will bring a return to seasonal temperatures as the ridge shuffles off to the east. Temperatures will climb to a high near 22°C with light winds and mainly sunny skies. By evening, some cloud cover will begin spreading into the Red River Valley as a warm front slowly pushes towards the region from the southwest. Temperatures should head to a low near 13°C on Thursday night under mixed to cloudy skies. There will be a slight chance of some showers overnight as a warm front pushes towards the region.

Friday will see warmer air trying to push into the region but not quite making it. Slowly lifted northwards by a low pressure system developing over Alberta, a warm front will lie southeastwards across Saskatchewan and into central North Dakota. Ahead of the warm front in the Red River Valley, southeasterly winds of 30 gusting 50 km/h will develop with mixed skies. With a bit less sunshine and the warmer air stuck to the southwest, Winnipeg will see a seasonal high near 22°C once again. This setup will also bring a small chance of a few showers to the region in the afternoon and through the night, but at this point the chances look low.

Long Range Outlook

Conditions will turn cloudier and unsettled for the weekend as the Alberta low finally pushes eastwards across the Prairies. Daytime highs will push back towards the mid-20s alongside breezy southerly winds. The city will see several chances for showers or thunderstorms both Saturday and Sunday. Forecasts show settled weather returning for Monday, but early indications are that the chance for showers returns on Tuesday and an unsettled pattern may persist for much of the remainder of the work week.
