Warm and Dry Weather Ahead

An upper-level ridge slowly building eastwards across the Prairies will bring generally sunny and increasingly warm weather to Winnipeg and the Red River Valley. For those who like summer weather, the next 5 days will be pretty much perfect!

The upper-level ridge that has been anchored over British Columbia over the past week will begin pushing eastwards, shifting the omega block pattern from the west coast to over the Prairies. This will spread mild weather over the Prairies and, eventually, break the persistent northerly winds that have been in place over the province and return a southerly flow that will bring humid conditions back to the region next week.

GDPS forecast 500mb heights and height anomalies valid 18Z Sunday August 13, 2017 with weather feature annotations.
By Sunday, the omega block will be situated over the central Prairies, however parts of Southern Manitoba will see some cloud as an upper low tracks through North Dakota.

So, for the coming few days, the forecast will be straightforward with daytime highs of 26 or 27°C and overnight lows in the 13-15°C range. Winds will be light over the next 3 days and there will be plenty of sunshine. Sunday may bring a few more clouds as an upper-level low passes by to our south, but even then we expect things to remain dry.

Long Range

Looking into the beginning of next week, things start off quite warm with highs climbing into the upper 20’s and overnight lows creeping up into the high teens. A trough of low pressure will begin building across the Prairies Monday night, bringing southerly winds into the region on Tuesday that will gradually ramp up the humidity. As it stands now, it appears that by the end of Tuesday dew points will climb to around 17°C, bringing slightly muggy weather back to the region.

A chance of showers or thunderstorms then returns to the region on Tuesday night into Wednesday and marks the transition into a few days of potentially unsettled weather. Temperatures will remain warm, though with highs continuing in the mid- to upper-twenties.

Winnipeg’s seasonal daytime high is currently 26°C while the seasonal overnight low is 12°C.

Get The Sunscreen Out; Plenty of Summer Sun & Heat On The Way

A beautiful second half to the week is ahead for Winnipeg as an upper-level ridge building into the Prairies brings plenty of sun and warmth to the area!

It’s been a while, but the forecast today is finally short once again. The next few days will be great across Winnipeg and the Red River Valley as upper-level ridging clears skies and ushers warmer weather back into the region. Today will bring highs near 26°C to Winnipeg and area with mainly sunny skies until late in the afternoon. A very weak upper-trough moving through late in the day will bring a few clouds to the region and perhaps trigger an isolated evening shower, but the main chance will be north of the city and it’s not expected that Winnipeg or areas south have much of a chance of seeing any rain.

The RDPS shows some isolated showers, mainly through the Interlake, late today in to the evening.

Temperatures will head to a low near 16°C tonight. Thursday and Friday will both be mild with high temperatures climbing towards 30°C on Friday. Both days will have plenty of sun; Thursday should bring nothing but sunshine while Friday brings partly cloudy skies. Winds will be out of the northwest today at 15-25 km/h, light on Thursday, and then increase out of the south on Friday to 20-30 km/h. Temperatures will dip down to around 17°C on Thursday night, but Friday will see a warmer overnight low near 20°C.

Long Range

Warm weather will continue throughout the weekend. A low pressure system moving through the Prairies on Saturday will bring increasing humidity and a risk of thunderstorms to much of Manitoba. For Winnipeg and the Red River Valley, the risk for storms will likely be in the late-afternoon and evening. Sunday will see northerly winds usher in drier air while temperatures return to near-seasonal values.

Next week looks to bring near-seasonal temperatures with a slight chance of some thunderstorms on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Winnipeg’s seasonal daytime high is currently 26°C while the seasonal overnight low is 13°C.

Beautiful Summer Weekend Ahead

Get the sunscreen & shorts out, there’s a beautiful summer weekend ahead for Winnipeg & the Red River Valley.

Today will be a beautiful mostly sunny day…after a weak disturbance tracking through the region overnight clears out early this morning, likely bringing some showers or thundershowers through the city with it. In its wake, skies will clear as temperatures head to a high near 25°C with light winds out of the northwest. Not much to say about today; it’s going to be a nice one!

Tonight will bring clear skies to the region with a low near 15°C and light winds the shift to southerly through the early evening as a weak warm front moves through.

If there was little to say about today, Saturday has even less. Temperatures will climb to a high near 28°C under clear skies. Winds will back to the northwest midday and increase to 15-25 km/h for the afternoon as a weak trough swings through the Red River Valley. Expect a low near 14°C on Saturday night with light winds and partly cloudy skies.

Sunday will bring a few more clouds to the region as a disturbance moves through North Dakota, but it appears conditions will be dry for Winnipeg & much of the Valley. A few showers or thunderstorms will be likely Saturday night into Sunday morning over the southwestern corner of the province and some of this activity could creep into the southwestern Red River Valley early Sunday, but it seems unlikely at this point. Temperatures will remain warm with highs once again near 28°C with light winds.

Skies will clear for Sunday night with temperatures heading to a low near 15°C.

Long Range

As we’ve been advertising all week, it continues to look like next week will be a warm one. A warm and sunny start to the week will then see a disturbance moves through the Prairies on Tuesday and Wednesday. Behind that system, the upper-level ridge responsible for the warm, dry weather will rebound and strengthen as it shifts eastwards from the western Prairies.

A potent upper-level ridge is forecast to develop over the Prairies in the latter half of next week.
As the upper ridge shifts eastwards, it will spread even more intense warmth into southern Manitoba. Current indications show the latter half of the week seeing daytime highs in the low 30’s and overnight lows near 20°C.

Winnipeg’s seasonal daytime high is currently 26°C while the seasonal overnight low is 13°C.

Calm & Cool Conditions Ahead

Winnipeg will see plenty of sunshine through the second half of the work week, but temperatures will remain slightly below seasonal values.

Today will be the cloudiest day of the next few as an area of low cloud brought into the southern Manitoba overnight by a low pressure system in northwestern Ontario gradually moves out of the region. Once the cloud clears through the afternoon and evening, Winnipeg & the Red River Valley will be left with mainly sunny for Thursday and Friday.

A ridge of high pressure building into the region will keep winds northerly and light over the next few days.

A ridge of high pressure will keep temperatures cooler in the eastern Prairies and help much warmer air build into Alberta and parts of southern Saskatchewan

Daytime highs and overnight lows will be fairly constant; expect daytime highs between 14-16°C and overnight lows near 2-4°C through to Friday.

No precipitation is expected.

Long Range

The weekend continues to look pleasant with daytime highs climbing back towards seasonal and more sunny skies.

There are hints of some cloud cover possible on Sunday—perhaps even a chance of a shower—but most guidance suggests another sunny day. Next week will start off with more calm & warm weather.

Winnipeg’s seasonal daytime high is currently 18°C while the seasonal overnight low is 4°C.
