Pleasant Days Ahead With Increasingly Unsettled Nights

Winnipeg will see temperatures begin to climb again as a deep southerly flow begins pushing summer heat back towards the region. With it, though, will come increasingly unsettled overnight conditions.

Today will be a cool but pleasant day in Winnipeg. With partly cloudy skies and breezy northwest winds near 30 gusting 50 km/h, temperatures will climb to a high near 19°C. A ridge of high pressure sliding across the province will ensure the winds drop off quickly in the evening. Temperatures will dip to a low near 8°C.

On Saturday, seasonal temperatures will return to Winnipeg with highs climbing to around 22°C. Southeasterly winds will begin to pick up in the afternoon into the 20 to 30 km/h range. Skies should be mainly sunny as well, making for a great summer Saturday. Conditions will turn heading into the evening, though, as clouds move in ahead of a warm front approaching the region. Overnight, a strong low-level jet will develop, supporting a broad area of showers that will lift northwards through the night. The showers will have limited instability, so while isolated thunderstorms will be possible there won’t be a notable severe weather threat. The showers will exit the region late overnight or early Sunday morning. The southeasterlies will persist right though the night at 30 to 40 km/h and temperatures should dip to a low near 13°C.

NAM Simulated RADAR Reflectivity valid 09Z Sunday June 7, 2020
Showers will move through southern Manitoba on Saturday night.

Sunday will bring mostly cloudy skies to the region with winds gradually easing to 30 gusting 50 km/h. After Saturday night’s showers move out, the day should stay dry. The high temperature will be a bit tricky and highly dependent on how much sunshine the city ends up with. A rather warm and humid summer air mass will be moving into the region. If skies stay overcast, Winnipeg may see a high of only 23 or 24°C. If the sun manages to poke out a bit more, temperatures could reach as high as the upper 20’s. For now, we expect a few sunny breaks but otherwise mainly cloudy skies and a high near 26°C.

NAM 2m Dew Point Forecast valid 00Z Monday June 8, 2020
Humid conditions will move into Southern Manitoba on Sunday afternoon with dew points climbing into the upper teens.

It will be a warm night on Sunday night with a good chance of showers and thunderstorms. The region may see isolated to scattered severe thunderstorms on Sunday night; be sure to check ECCC’s thunderstorm outlook as the weekend progresses in our Bulletin Viewer. Temperatures will reach a low near 18°C on Sunday night with relatively humid conditions.

Long Range Outlook

To start next week, Monday will bring more hot and humid weather with high approaching 30°C and humidex values near 35. Drier westerly winds will move into the region by Monday evening, breaking the humid weather and allowing lows to return to the mid- to low teens. The rest of the work week looks to bring seasonal to slightly cool temperatures and variable cloudiness.

Today’s seasonal daytime high in Winnipeg is 22°C while the seasonal overnight low is 9°C.

Warm, Summer Conditions Ahead

Winnipeg will enjoy mild temperatures through much of the rest of the work week with the occasional chance of showers or thunderstorms.

Today will be another warm, sunny day in Winnipeg with temperatures climbing to a high near 29°C. Skies will become a partly cloudy this afternoon as a trough of low pressure moves into the Red River Valley. Ahead of this trough, winds will pick up out of the south into the 20 to 30 km/h range. By the evening, this trough will likely produce scattered thunderstorms pushing eastwards across the valley. While these thunderstorms won’t have too much energy to work with, strong wind shear aloft may result in the potential for an isolated severe storm or two capable of nickel-sized hail and/or damaging wind gusts. The trough will move out of the Red River Valley before midnight, leaving clear skies, diminishing westerly winds, and lows near 14°C.

NAM-NMMB Simulated Composite RADAR Reflectivity valid 04Z Thursday June 4, 2020
A line of thunderstorms will likely develop on Wednesday afternoon and move across the Red River Valley through the evening.

On Thursday, the city will see another mild day, but not as hot as today. Temperatures will climb to a high near 25°C, slightly cooler in the wake of a weak cold front that moves through Wednesday night. Skies will become partly cloudy to mixed through the afternoon as winds pick up out of the west to 30 gusting 50 km/h. By evening, the region will see a chance of showers as an upper low pushes across southern Manitoba. It doesn’t look like thunderstorms will be much of a threat, but an isolated storm or two can’t be ruled out. There wouldn’t be any risk of severe weather with any that formed. Skies will clear on Thursday night with temperatures dipping to a low near 11°C.

On Friday, cooler air will filter southwards into the region in the wake of the upper low. As a result, temperatures will be cooler with a high near 20°C. Skies should stay mainly sunny as a ridge of high pressure builds into the region. Winds will be a bit breezy out of the northwest at 30 gusting 50 km/h. Skies will clear on Friday night with temperatures heading to a low near 10°C.

Long Range Outlook

A significant change in the weather pattern will develop this weekend as a deep upper trough digs down the Pacific coast and a persistent southerly flow develops over the American Plains. As a result, warmer and increasingly humid conditions will likely develop over southern Manitoba.

A series of moderately strong low pressure systems will eject northwards out of Montana into the central Prairies, bringing plenty of cloud cover and several chances for rain or thunderstorms. The unsettled pattern will likely develop Saturday night and persist right into the middle of next week.

It’s far to early to say how much, or if, Winnipeg and area will see rain from these systems. We’ll continue to watch this developing pattern and have more details on what to expect in our Friday forecast.

Today’s seasonal daytime high in Winnipeg is 22°C while the seasonal overnight low is 9°C.

Unsettled Summer Weather Ahead

Winnipeg will see mild temperatures through the first half of the week, but also several chances for showers or thunderstorms.

Today will start off with a few showers as a trough of low pressure moves through the region. The rain should clear out early in the morning, leaving increasingly humid conditions as temperatures climb into the mid-20s. A cold front will push through midday, bringing breezy westerly winds of 30 gusting 50 km/h that usher in drier air and clear out any remaining clouds. Temperatures will continue to climb to about 31°C this afternoon under mainly sunny skies. The winds will ease tonight as temperatures head to a low near 16°C with increasing clouds towards morning.

Tuesday will start with a disturbance tracking along the U.S. border that will likely spread showers across southern Manitoba. There will be a chance for these showers to have a few embedded thunderstorms as well. That activity will move out through the morning, followed by mixed skies with temperatures climbing to a high near 27°C. A cool trough pushing in from the northwest through the afternoon hours will bring another risk of thunderstorms to the region late in the day. Skies should clear out overnight as temperatures dip to a low near 12°C.

RDPS 2m Dew Point Forecast valid 18Z Monday June 1, 2020
Conditions will become a bit muggy by midday Monday, but a cold front will push drier air into the region for the afternoon hours.

Wednesday will start off sunny, but then see late day clouds increase as another low pressure system moves into the province from Saskatchewan. Temperatures will climb to a high near 28°C with southerly winds in the 20 to 30 km/h range. A few showers or thunderstorms will be possible later in the day through the evening hours as well. Skies will clear out overnight with temperatures dipping to a low near 14°C.

Long Range Outlook

The weather will become more settled through the second half of the week with a return to seasonal temperatures. Heading through the weekend, however, it looks like conditions will turn significantly more unsettled as numerous low pressure systems begin to track across the region.

Today’s seasonal daytime high in Winnipeg is 22°C while the seasonal overnight low is 9°C.

Seasonal Weather Returns to Winnipeg

Winnipeg will see seasonal conditions over the coming days with increasing sunshine.

After a mostly cloudy start to the day, the cloud cover should begin to break up this morning. With mixed skies through the rest of the day, Winnipeg will see temperatures climb to a high near 23°C. Winds will be light out of the north today as a ridge of high pressure moves towards the area. Skies will stay mixed to cloudy tonight as a low pressure system in Minnesota lifts towards Lake of the Woods. It will spread showers across southeastern Manitoba through the night. The rain should stay to the south and east of Winnipeg, but there is a chance that a few passing showers graze the city overnight. Temperatures will dip to a low near 12°C.

On Wednesday, skies will clear quickly behind the cold front with westerly winds picking up into the 30 to 40 km/h range. The city will see a high near 23°C. Winds will ease to around 20 km/h on Wednesday night as temperatures dip to a low near 10°C.

Long Range Outlook

Cooler temperatures will move in for the second half of the week with highs in the mid-teens and lows down to the mid-single digits. No notable precipitation is in the forecast for the rest of the work week. Heading into the weekend, warmer weather will begin to push back into the region with highs approaching 30°C to start next week!
