Mild Winter Weather Continues

Temperatures will continue to stay well above seasonal averages as Winnipeg’s mild winter continues.

A series of low pressure systems will move across the province over the coming days, bringing mild temperatures with them. The first one moved into the province overnight, bringing temperatures up to -2 °C with moderate southerly winds. The city will see some light snow first thing this morning as the winds taper off. A cold front will pass later this morning, bringing brisk northwest winds up to 40 gusting 60 km/h as skies clear. These winds will usher in colder air and send temperatures falling through the afternoon to around -10 °C. The winds will drop off this evening with temperatures falling to a low near -19 °C.

On Saturday, the city will see increasing cloudiness with strengthening southerly winds as the next low approaches. Temperatures will climb to a high near -5 °C with southerly winds in the 30–40 km/h range. The winds will ease on Saturday evening with some of the cloud cover breaking up. Temperatures will head to a low near -14 °C with some northwest winds picking up to 30 km/h as a cold front sweeps through. A few flurries will be possible along the cold front as it moves through.

Today’s seasonal daytime high in Winnipeg is -11 °C while the seasonal overnight low is -20 °C.

A Short-Lived Cold Snap

Winnipeg saw temperatures plunge back towards seasonal values overnight after a cold front swept through the region on Sunday. These colder temperatures will be short-lived, though, with milder temperatures returning to the region mid-week.

Temperatures will be seasonably cool in Winnipeg today as an Arctic ridge moves through the region. The city will see a high near -14 °C with light winds as the ridge moves across the Red River Valley. Some cloud will work into the region today as warmer air starts pushing in from the west.

Skies will stay mainly cloudy in Winnipeg on Tuesday as that weak shortwave moves across the region. Clipper System Brings Winter Back to Winnipeg

After record-breaking warmth yesterday, a change in the weather is coming up as a clipper will bring snow and usher a much colder air mass into the region.

Today will still be fairly mild in Winnipeg with temperatures once again climbing above freezing. The city should see a high near +2 °C with clouds increasing this afternoon as a low crossing the Northern Plains pushes towards the region. Skies will cloud over this evening with light snow beginning overnight. Temperatures will dip to a low near -2 °C.

Accumulating snow will taper off by midday Thursday with 5–10 cm likely in the Winnipeg area. There’s a slight chance that the snow band from this low will end up a touch further south; that would put Winnipeg closer to 2–5 cm and the southern Red River Valley in the 5–10 cm range. After the main snow tapers off, flurries will linger as a cold front gradually slumps southwards into the region. Temperatures will reach a high near -1 °C with northwest winds climbing into the 20–30 km/h range. The flurries will taper off overnight as temperatures head to a low near -9 °C and winds ease.

Today’s seasonal daytime high in Winnipeg is -9 °C while the seasonal overnight low is -18 °C.

Mild Weather Continues, Chance of Snow Tonight

Winnipeg will continue to see seasonably mild conditions through the rest of the week. A low moving through the province will bring a chance of light snow to the Red River Valley tonight.

A low pressure complex crossing the Prairies will bring more mild weather to Winnipeg today. Southerly winds picking up into the 30–40 km/h range will accompany temperatures climbing to a high near +1 °C. The city should see partly cloudy skies with thicker cloud moving in for the evening. Temperatures will dip to a low near -4 °C tonight with the winds easing overnight and shift westwards. A chance of light snow will develop overnight as a weak cold front pushes into the Red River Valley.

The chance for snow will taper off Thursday morning with cloudy skies giving way to some afternoon sunny breaks. Temperatures will barely be cooler than today with a high near 0 °C. Skies will stay cloudy tomorrow evening into the night as shortwave moves into the region as it digs southwards into the upper trough. This will bring another chance of some light snow to Winnipeg on Thursday evening. Skies will clear out through the second half of the night with temperatures dipping to a low near -9 °C.
