Mild Start to Week Turns Unpleasant

Winnipeg will enjoy two mild days before what may be a significant winter storm moves into the province.

Winnipeg will enjoy seasonable warmth over the next couple days. An upper level ridge moving across the region will usher in southerly winds and warmer weather. Both today and tomorrow will see highs climb towards 20°C with southerly winds of 20 to 30 km/h. The city should see plenty of sunshine both days and seasonably mild overnight lows.

Unfortunately, a significant change in the weather is on the way for Wednesday. A potent low pressure system tracking through the Northwest Territories will combine with a deepening long-wave trough to send a cold front surging southeastwards across the Prairies. It will push into southern Manitoba on Wednesday, bringing much cooler temperatures and cloudy skies. Winds will strengthen to 30 gusting 50 km/h out of the north and the entire region will see a chance of showers.

The precipitation will organize on Wednesday night with heavier bands lifting northeastwards out of the Dakotas. There’s some uncertainty right now, but it’s possible that the rain mixes or changes over to snow sometime Wednesday night.

Long Range Outlook

Before anything else: there is still significant uncertainty with how the weather will develop later this week. With that said, southern Manitoba may see a multi-day winter storm on Thursday through Saturday. A potent Colorado Low will begin lifting northeastwards on Thursday, spreading moderate to heavy precipitation into the region. While this happens, northerly winds will strengthen and sustain a feed of cold Arctic air into the region. As the low reaches Lake of the Woods on Friday, it is forecast to stall out for 24 to 48 hours. This will result in bands of precipitation back into southern Manitoba, gradually changing to snow.

Exactly how much precipitation the region sees and what it falls at is uncertain; there’s a lot of ways this forecast can change between now and then. If this ends up on the snowier side, it could end up being a fairly major snowfall with at least 20 to 30 cm of the white stuff. Persistent rainfall may reduce snowfall amounts in some areas. But more rain isn’t exactly a desirable thing for a region whose rivers are already swollen with excess rainfall over the past month. This system could easily produce another 25 to 50 mm over the region which, if falling as rain, would quickly find its way into the river and aggravate overland flooding issues that exist in areas of the province.

Cloudy, Seasonably Cool Start To The Week

Winnipeg’s cool weather will continue with a bit of snow to kick off the work week. Cool conditions with more cloud than sun will continue through much of the week.

Winnipeg will start the work week with a bit of snow. While unwelcome, it’s a far cry from the blizzard that pounded portions of southern Alberta and Saskatchewan yesterday. The chance for snow will taper off by late morning as the low pressure system responsible for it moves from the Dakotas eastwards into Minnesota. Behind it, the city will continue to see cloudy skies. Breezy winds out of the northeast near 30 km/h this morning will gradually ease this afternoon. These winds will be continually tapping into cooler temperatures through the day, keeping Winnipeg’s high near a cool 7°C. The city will see light easterly winds and a low near 0°C tonight as the cloud cover breaks up a bit.

Tuesday will bring mixed skies to Winnipeg as a ridge of high pressure moves though. The city should see some sunshine in the morning, but some convective cloud and incoming system cloud from the next disturbance will result in cloudy skies redeveloping for the afternoon. Winds will stay light out of the east with temperatures climbing to another below-seasonal high near 9°C. The cloudy skies will stay for Tuesday night with a low near +2°C.

On Wednesday, cloudy skies will continue with light winds. A chance of showers will develop through the afternoon and continue overnight. Temperatures will climb to a high near 11°C then fall to an overnight low near +2 or +3°C.

Long Range Outlook

The rest of the week will bring variable cloudiness and occasional chances for showers. Temperatures will return to near-seasonal values, but will likely continue to trend on the cooler side.

Cool, Cloudy Weather Ahead

Winnipeg will continue to see seasonably cool temperatures with more cloud cover on the way.

A major winter storm over the American Plains will dominate the weather story for the entire region over the next few days. While Winnipeg and the Red River Valley won’t see any precipitation from this system, it will still shape conditions here for the rest of the week.

Today, the city will see mixed skies with scattered flurries as a band of cloud pushes westwards across the region. Northeasterly winds near 20 km/h will keep temperatures cool today with a high near 5°C. Variable cloudiness will continue tonight with temperatures dipping to around -5°C.

Winnipeg may see a bit of sun on Thursday morning, but clouds will push northwards from the U.S. into the region through the day. Once the skies cloud over, it’ll stick around right into the weekend. Both Thursday and Friday will bring daytime highs near 5°C with continuing northeasterly winds. Both Thursday and Friday nights should bring near-seasonal lows around -3°C.

Long Range Outlook

Some sun should finally poke out on Saturday and stick around for the rest of the weekend. Temperatures will return to seasonal values making for the return of pleasant spring weather!

More Showers Lead to Cooler Conditions

Winnipeg will see another chance of showers this morning followed by the passage of a cold front which will bring seasonably cool conditions back to the region.

The city will start today with some showers moving through the region followed by cloudy skies with a chance of drizzle. Temperatures should reach a high near 5°C with northwesterly winds near 20 km/h through much of the day. A cold front will push through in the evening, bringing a chance for flurries as it passes. Behind it, the cloud cover will begin to break up as temperatures head to a low near -9°C.

The rest of the week will see Winnipeg entrenched under a weak Arctic ridge extending from Hudson Bay southwards through the province. The city will see variable cloudiness as systems pass by to the south and slightly below-seasonal temperatures. Winds will continue from the north to northeast around 20 to 30 km/h both Tuesday and Wednesday.

The rest of the week looks quiet with variable cloudiness and near-seasonal temperatures.
