Warm Start to the Week

This week will start out seasonably warm, a nice turn-around after a cool end to last week.

Today will be a nice day in Southern Manitoba. Temperatures will be in the mid teens under sunny skies. The wind will be light as well, making for all around pleasant conditions.

Tuesday will once again see mild conditions in Southern Manitoba. There may be a bit more cloud compared to Monday, but temperatures are still expected to be warm, with highs in the upper teens or low twenties. Tuesday will be a bit windier than Monday, but even so the wind won’t be a big issue.

Conditions will change little for Wednesday. Temperatures will once again be in the mid teens in Southern Manitoba with light winds. Wednesday will be a cloudier day however, as a weather system to our south spreads some cloud cover over Southern Manitoba.

Long Range

The weather for the late week period is looking a bit interesting. A large low pressure system is currently forecast to move through Southern Manitoba towards the weekend. At this point it appears precipitation from this system will be mostly rain, although some flurries may be possible as it exits the region. More details on this system will be available later in the week.

Pleasant Second Half of the Week

After some unsettled weather the past couple days, we’ll be seeing pleasant, slightly warmer-than-normal days through the second half of the week as a ridge of high pressure builds into the Prairies.

We’ll see a few clouds today with a breezy northerly wind as cooler air moves in behind yesterday’s cold front. We may see some isolated showers late in the day thanks to weak convergence along the western shores of Lake Winnipeg, however they would certainly not be widespread and they would have very limited duration. We’ll see a high of around 22°C tomorrow and we’ll drop down to a chilly 8°C overnight under clear skies.

Thursday will be the coolest day of the week with temperatures topping out only around 21°C and an overnight low dropping down to around 7°C. It may actually end up being one or two degrees colder than that at night depending exactly where the main axis of the surface ridge lines up, but suffice to say it will be quite cool on Thursday night. Winds will be light through the day and we’ll see mainly sunny skies and a clear night.

Friday looks to be a fairly nice day as an incredibly potent low pressure system moving through the Kivalliq region of Nunavut into Hudson Bay draws warm air from the Alberta Foothills eastwards across the Prairies. At this point it looks like Winnipeg will get into that warm air and see a high temperature around 25°C, although if the warmth ends up occluding slightly faster, the mid–20’s may be confined to Montana and North Dakota while we remain in the low 20’s. We’ll see a few clouds through the day, but for the most part it should be quite nice with winds out of the south or southwest at around 20km/h. Friday night will cool off to the low teens under clear skies.

A Look Ahead to the Weekend

The weekend looks pretty great at this point. A large ridge of high pressure will move in behind the powerful Arctic low bringing sunny skies, light winds and highs in the low 20’s. Saturday & Sunday nights will be quite chilly, though, with temperatures dipping down into the 4–5°C range, and perhaps even cooler outside the City of Winnipeg. We may end up seeing our first significant risk of frost this weekend depending on exactly how strong that ridge of high pressure ends up being.

Heat Continues

The hot weather will continue into this week, with some of the hottest weather of the season on Monday and Tuesday.

Monday will be a hot, but decreasingly humid day. The morning and early afternoon may be on the humid side, but a westerly wind and mixing of drier air from aloft should remove a fair amount of moisture from the air by late afternoon into the evening. Highs on Monday will be in the low thirties, with nice sunny skies.

Tuesday will again be hot, but not humid. Another plume of hot air coming off the Rockies will allow temperatures to climb into the low and maybe even mid thirties over Southern Manitoba. Just south of the border there may be the potential for upper thirties temperatures in the Fargo and Grand Forks areas. Depending on how far north this plume of warm air pushes, actual temperatures may be slightly warmer or cooler than suggested above. Again, no rain is expected.

A strong cold front will push through on Tuesday night, setting up significantly cooler conditions for Wednesday. No significant weather is expected with this front, owing to a dry airmass ahead of it, although a stray shower or weak thunderstorm cannot be ruled out. Highs on Wednesday will only be in the low to mid twenties. The wind will be gusty and from the north-west.

Long Range

Beyond Wednesday it looks like warmer weather will return once again, with temperatures in the upper twenties, or maybe low thirties, looking possible from late this week into next weekend. Summer appears to be making a long term stay.

Nice Days Ahead

After a very active week across Southern Manitoba, a cold front passed through yesterday that is ushering in a ridge of high pressure that will set us up for a pleasant weekend.

A second cold front will be passing through southern Manitoba today however not nearly as much thunderstorm activity is expected with it as the hot, humid air that brought yesterday’s storms has been washed out of the province. A few non-severe thunderstorms are likely over the SW corner of the province and there’s a very slight chance of a thundershower over the Red River Valley, although if that were to happen it would likely be confined to the southern portions closer to the International Border.

A cool air mass will be pushing it with the ridge of high pressure which will allow our overnight lows to drop to around 10°C overnight, which is quite cool for the middle of July. Daytime highs will climb to the mid-20’s today, only to around 20°C on Saturday, then back to the mid-20’s on Sunday.

The start of next week is a little uncertain with some models hinting at another batch of severe thunderstorms on Monday night. We’ll keep you posted!
