Another Heat Wave Ramps Up

Winnipeg will see temperatures climbing back towards the mid-30s this week as another heat wave is set to develop over the region.

Winnipeg will move into another extended period of hot, dry weather over the coming days. An upper ridge will gradually amplify over the rest of the week, producing another broad area of clear skies with increasingly hot weather.

Before the warmer weather starts, the city will see one more “cool” day. Skies will be a bit cloudier this morning with a few showers or thunderstorms drifting into the Red River Valley. Most of this activity will pass to the south of Winnipeg, but there is a chance for the city to see a shower or thunderstorm in the first half of the day. Skies will clear for the afternoon with temperatures climbing to a high near 29 °C. Skies will stay mainly clear tonight with a low near 15 °C.

Very warm temperatures will develop over the southern Prairies on Friday.

The rest of the week will bring warming temperatures and mainly clear skies. As the upper ridge amplifies, daytime highs will climb to 35 °C by Friday. Overnight lows will warm to around 20 °C. Winds will be light on Thursday, but southerlies will pick up to around 20 km/h on Friday.

Hazy skies will linger through the region this week.

Long Range Outlook

Temperatures will stay in the mid- to upper-30s through the weekend and right through next week. While there may be the periodic chance of showers or thunderstorms, little to no organized rainfall potential is in the forecast.

The hot, dry conditions will continue to worsen the drought over the region and push more regions into an extreme fire danger. While smoke plumes can be difficult to forecast beyond short time ranges, it’s highly likely that southern Manitoba will continue to see varying amounts of smoke moving through the region.

Drink lots of water, check on those who may not be able to protect themselves from the heat as well, and stay safe!

Hot Weather Continues

Hot and increasingly dry conditions will continue to be the weather story for Winnipeg and the Red River Valley.

It’s only going to get drier across the Red River Valley this week as intense summer heat bakes the region. Winnipeg will see highs hovering around 30 or 31 °C through the first half of the week with lows in the upper teens.

Winds will be breezy out of the south today with southerly winds of 30–40 km/h picking up this morning. A trough will push across the region today, and while it supported widespread thunderstorms overnight, it will be less active as it moves into the Red River Valley. Winnipeg will see a chance of showers or thunderstorms beginning around lunch and persisting until early evening. If any thunderstorms are able to develop, they will have a small chance of producing severe hazards with primary threats of damaging wind and/or hail.

Winnipeg’s “cooling off” this week will be to highs near 30 °C. Hotter temperatures will return later this week.

Behind this trough, winds will shift to the northwest and then ease overnight. The northwesterly flow will usher in smokier conditions to the region once again. This time, the smoke will be coming from fires burning over northern Saskatchewan.

Tuesday and Wednesday will each bring light north-northeast winds and only a few clouds. The smoke, however, will likely stick around. While near-surface conditions will improve a bit, quite a bit of smoke will likely linger aloft over the region, casting that familiar slight orange hue under hazy skies.

Long Range Outlook

Another surge of hot air will move into the region for the second half of the week. Daytime highs will climb towards the mid-30s by the end of the week with overnight lows near 20 °C. While a couple shortwaves may meander over the region, an amplifying upper ridge should also keep the clouds at bay.

The forecasts show no notable precipitation for the Winnipeg area in the second half of the week or the weekend.

Warm Weather Ahead

Warm summer weather will continue through the weekend in Winnipeg.

Summer heat returns to southern Manitoba with highs in the low 30s today. Winnipeg will see temperatures climb to a high near 30 °C before a cold front begins slumping into the region. As the front moves in this afternoon, the city will see increasing cloud cover with a good chance of showers. There will also be a chance for a few thunderstorms afternoon with a small chance of a marginally severe thunderstorm. The primary threats from any thunderstorms that develop would be damaging hail and/or damaging wind gusts. The showers and thunderstorms will push off into northwestern Ontario this evening.

The city will see a breezy start to the day with southerly winds of 30 gusting 50 km/h. The winds will ease midday as the cold front approaches, then pick up out of the northwest to 30 gusting 50 km/h this evening. Skies will clear out with easing winds overnight as temperatures head to a low near 13 °C.

Hot weather will push back into southern Manitoba today with highs in the low 30s along and south of the Trans-Canada Highway.

Winnipeg will see a quieter day on Thursday with sunshine in the morning and a few clouds in the afternoon. Temperatures will climb to a high near 27 °C with a northwest breeze around 20 km/h. Heading into the evening, an upper-level disturbance tracking along the international border will spread more cloud into the region. Showers will push into southwestern Manitoba in the evening, then onwards towards the Red River Valley. There will be a chance for Winnipeg to see some rain from this overnight, but the rain may end up slumping a bit further south and missing the city.

Temperatures will head to a low near 15 °C on Thursday night.

On Friday, a broad ridge of high pressure will bring plenty of sun to the region. Temperatures will again climb to a high near 27 °C with light winds. More cloud will push into the region on Friday night ahead of another disturbance moving into the region from the northwest. Temperatures will head to a low near 16 °C overnight.

Long Range Outlook

Warm weather will continue through the weekend in Winnipeg with highs in the upper 20s and lows in the mid-teens. The city will likely see mixed skies on Saturday with a chance of showers or thunderstorms later in the day, while Sunday should bring more sun back to the region. A potent upper high building into the Prairies next week will bring an extended period of sunny weather with highs in the upper 20s or low 30s.

Windy Second Half of Week Ushers in Cooler Weather

A low pressure system crossing the northern Prairies will bring a surge of cooler air for the weekend.

Winnipeg will see moderate winds today that will bring hot weather to the region. With plenty of sun, southerly winds will increase into the 30–40 km/h range this morning. Those gusty winds will send temperatures climbing to a high near 32 °C this afternoon with increasing humidity. A trough will move into the Red River Valley mid-afternoon, bringing a few clouds and the chance of scattered showers or thunderstorms. West-northwest winds of 20–30 km/h will develop this evening behind the trough and gradually diminish overnight.

The Red River Valley will see very warm temperatures today with highs in the low 30s.

Winnipeg will see moderate west-northwest winds behind the front on Thursday. Temperatures will still be fairly warm with a high near 28 °C with a drier air mass over the region. The winds will peak in the afternoon at 40 gusting 60 km/h then ease to around 20 km/h overnight. Temperatures will head to a low near 13 °C.

Another cold front will slump into southern Manitoba from the north on Friday. It will bring cloudier conditions to the region along with moderate northwest winds near 30 km/h. There may end up being a chance of showers, but much of the activity will likely pass to the east. It will be a noticeably cooler day with a below-seasonal high near 18 °C in Winnipeg. The city will see clearing skies and a low near 9 °C on Friday night.

Long Range Outlook

Temperatures will remain seasonal to below-seasonal in Winnipeg for the weekend and into next week. Saturday looks to be a pleasant day, however clouds and the chance of showers return for Sunday and Monday. This unsettled pattern will continue into mid-week before things begin warming up in the latter half of the week.
