Mild Weather Continues Despite Unsettled Wednesday

Winnipeg will continue to see seasonably mild temperatures even as a disturbance moves through the province today.

It’s back to cloudy skies in the city today with rain lifting northwards out of the Dakotas. Period of rain will begin later this morning in Winnipeg with 5–10 mm possible by the end of the day. Heavier rain will fall to the east with 10–20 mm likely over the eastern Red River Valley into the southeastern corner of the province. Despite the rain, it will be seasonably warm today with a high near 9 °C. The breezy southeasterly winds in the area this morning will diminish through the day.

The rain will shift off to the east tonight, but skies will stay cloudy for the rest of the night. Temperatures will dip to a low near 4 °C.

RDPS 24hr. Precipitation Accumulation Forecast valid 12Z Thursday October 28, 2021
Rain will spread through much of eastern Manitoba over the next 24 hours with many areas seeing at least 5–10 mm.

Thursday will continue to be seasonably warm in Winnipeg. Temperature swill climb back to around 11 °C with northwest winds near 20 km/h. Skies will be cloudy for much of the day, but some clearing should work its way in through the afternoon. Skies should completely clear out in the evening as a ridge of high pressure moves over the region. Temperatures will dip below the freezing mark on Thursday night.

And finally, to wrap up the work week, Friday will bring beautiful late-October weather to the area. With plenty of sunshine temperatures will climb to a high near 12 °C. Winds will be breezy out of the south at 30–40 km/h, though. A few clouds will begin working into the region in the afternoon as the next low pressure system begins its approach.

Cloudier skies will move in for Friday night and Winnipeg will see a chance of showers as the low crosses the province. Temperatures will once again stay mild with a low near 5 °C.

Long Range Outlook

Behind Friday’s low, Arctic air will flood across the Prairies and usher seasonal to below-seasonal temperatures into the region. Breezy northwest winds will send temperatures into the low single digits by the end of the weekend. The surge of colder air will generate a lot of lake-effect precipitation — both rain and snow — that will affect the region for several days. The return to cooler conditions looks to continue through the rest of next week.

Today’s seasonal daytime high in Winnipeg is 6 °C while the seasonal overnight low is -3 °C.

Winnipeg To See A Windy Return to Seasonably Warm Conditions

A surge of mild Pacific air will bring pleasant fall conditions back to Winnipeg, but it will get rather windy as it does so.

It will be a beautiful start to the week for late-October in Winnipeg today. A lingering ridge of high pressure will bring the city plenty of sunshine as temperatures climb to a high near 9 °C. As the warm air slowly approaches from the west, winds will begin to pick up over the Red River Valley. Winnipeg should see southeasterlies strengthen to 30 gusting 50 km/h by the afternoon. Those winds will continue tonight as the warm air pushes east and cloudier conditions move into the region. The city will see a low near +4 °C.

The winds in the Red River Valley will ratchet up to around 50 gusting 70 km/h on Tuesday as the clouds thicken up. Temperatures will be seasonably mild with a high near 11 °C. Some rain will likely move through western Manitoba, but here in the Red River Valley it should stay dry through the day. It will be cloudy on Tuesday night in Winnipeg with a mild low near 7 °C.

RDPS 10m AGL Wind Forecast valid 18Z Tuesday October 26, 2021
Strong southeasterly winds will develop over southern Manitoba on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, an area of rain will push out of the Dakotas into southeastern Manitoba. It’s likely that a portion of the Red River Valley will get clipped by this system. Winnipeg will also see a chance of showers with this system, but with the rain mainly moving by to the east, it may be a miss or just a glancing shot. Daytime highs will again climb to around 10 °C with southerly winds of 20–30 km/h. The rain will move out evening, leaving behind gradually clearing skies and a low near +2 °C.

Long Range Outlook

Mild conditions will continue through the second half of the work week with more sunshine. Another disturbance will move through on Saturday and bring a chance of showers with it. Behind that, northwesterly winds will usher a more seasonal air mass back into the region for the following week.

Today’s seasonal daytime high in Winnipeg is 6 °C while the seasonal overnight low is -3 °C.

Cold Front Brings Return of Seasonal Temperatures

A cold front sweeping across the Prairies will bring seasonal temperatures back to southern Manitoba after one more mild day.

It will be another mild day today in Winnipeg with a high near 21 °C as southerly winds continue to push warmer air north. Those winds will be breezy at around 30 gusting 50 km/h midday into the afternoon. The upper ridging over the region will continue to keep skies mainly sunny.

Things will change tonight, though, as a low crosses the province. A cold front will sweep southeastwards across the region overnight, ushering in a more seasonal air mass. Winnipeg will see the cloud cover increase overnight with temperatures dipping to around 6 °C. Those southerly winds will taper off overnight, then pick up out of the north to 30 km/h by Tuesday morning.

RDPS 2m Temperature Forecast valid 03Z Tuesday October 19, 2021
A cold front will sweep through southern Manitoba on Monday evening.

For the rest of the week, a broad area of high pressure will slowly settle into Manitoba. For Tuesday and Wednesday, it will bring northerly winds to the region and send temperatures back to near-seasonal values. It will be quite windy on Tuesday with northerly winds up to 40 gusting 60 km/h, but Wednesday will see those winds ease into the 20–30 km/h range. A cloudier start on Tuesday will see clearing later in the day. Wednesday should bring fairly sunny conditions save for any low cloud that streams off of Lake Manitoba and Lake Winnipeg.

Winnipeg will likely see frost and/or hard freezes beginning Tuesday night for the rest of the week. That’s not unusually with a seasonal low near -2 °C, but the city has managed to avoid it often so far this fall.

Long Range Outlook

Temperatures will cool to slightly below seasonal temperatures for the second half of the week with highs in the mid-single digits. Overnight lows will have at or just below seasonal values as well. Conditions will stay dry, but there is a chance for some lake-effect precipitation at the end of the week.

Today’s seasonal daytime high in Winnipeg is 9 °C while the seasonal overnight low is -2 °C.

Warming For The Weekend

Winnipeg will see one more cool and unsettled day before warmer weather moves in for the weekend.

It will be another seasonably cool day in Winnipeg today in the wake of the low pressure system that moved through mid-week. Temperatures will climb to a high near 9 °C with westerly winds of 20–30 km/h. The entire region will likely see scattered showers move through, tapering off from west to east through the afternoon. Skies will clear out this evening as the winds ease. Winnipeg will see a low near +1 °C.

RDPS 2m Temperature Forecast valid 21Z Sunday October 17, 2021
A surge of warmer weather will spread across the Prairies this weekend.

An upper ridge will strengthen as it moves into the Prairies this weekend, bringing sunny skies and a milder Pacific air mass. Winnipeg will see clear skies through the weekend with westerly winds near 20 km/h on Saturday and southerly winds of 20–30 km/h on Sunday. Temperatures will climb to a high near 14 °C on Saturday, followed by the upper teens on Sunday. Overnight lows will warm from the low single digits on Saturday night to around 5 °C on Sunday night.

Long Range Outlook

The warmer weather will stick around for Monday, then a cold front will sweep across the region. Forecasts show little precipitation with this, but temperatures will shift back towards more seasonal values for the rest of the week.

Today’s seasonal daytime high in Winnipeg is 10 °C while the seasonal overnight low is 0 °C.
