Cool, Wet Weather As Fall-Like Conditions Arrive

A passing low pressure system will bring wet, cool, and windy conditions to the Red River Valley to start the week.

Today will be another unsettled day across southern Manitoba, but Winnipeg might just miss out on most of the activity. Skies will stay mostly cloudy through the day and temperatures will be seasonably cool with a high near 20°C. A low pressure centre moving from the Interlake into northwestern Ontario will bring light winds in the morning that strengthen out of the northwest into the 30 gusting 50 km/h range for the afternoon. The region will be mostly dry to start the day, but through the afternoon widespread showers and thunderstorms will develop. The precipitation will track from northwest to southeast and has the potential to impact most of the Red River Valley. That said, Winnipeg may stay dry and sit between bands of showers to the southwest and the northeast.

Temperatures will dip to a low near 14°C tonight with mostly cloudy skies and a chance of showers. Winds will persist out of the northwest near 20 km/h.

Tuesday will be a bit of a shock to the system as the first blast of fall-like conditions moves into the region. A trough of low pressure will keep it cloudy and likely bring periods of rain to the city. The northwesterly wind will strengthen as high as 40 gusting 60 km/h and usher in a significantly cooler air mass. As a result, the temperature will slide from near 14°C in the morning to 11 or 12°C in the afternoon. The wind will continue around 30 gusting 50 km/h on Tuesday night as temperatures drop stay steady around 11 or 12°C.

Wednesday will finally bring clearing skies and sunshine back to the region. Winds will continue out of the northwest near 30 gusting 50 km/h right through the day, but temperatures will rebound back to a high near 19°C. The wind will finally ease on Wednesday evening with temperatures heading to a low near 13°C under mixed skies.

Long Range Outlook

The remainder of the week should bring more settled conditions with plenty of sunshine and no significant precipitation expected. Temperatures should gradually return to near-seasonal values.

Unsettled Weather Arrives For The Weekend

A slow-moving disturbance will bring unsettled conditions to the Red River Valley this weekend.

Winnipeg will see a beautiful end to the work week today as temperatures return to the upper 20s with plenty of sunshine. That warmth will come with breezy conditions as southerly winds strengthen to 30 gusting 50 km/h this morning. The city should see partly cloudy skies for much of the day, but cloud cover will thicken up in the evening.

It will be a warm night tonight with temperatures only dropping to around 19°C under cloudy skies. The southerly winds will continue right through the night.

Showers and/or thunderstorms will develop over western Manitoba overnight and slowly push northeast. This activity will likely stay west and north of Winnipeg, but there’s a chance that passing showers may graze Winnipeg on Saturday morning.

Through the rest of Saturday, the city will see cloudy skies with winds continuing to strengthen to 40 gusting 60 km/h out of the south. Showers and/or thunderstorms are likely through the day to the west and north of the city, but they will slowly push eastwards through the day. Despite the cloud, it will still be fairly warm with a high near 25°C.

The wind will continue through Saturday night in the 30 to 40 km/h range. Skies will stay cloudy through the night with temperatures dropping to a low near 17°C.

Showers will slowly move eastwards into the region overnight with what looks like a good chance of some rain before the sun rises on Sunday. There will be a risk of a thunderstorm with the showers pushing eastwards overnight.

Winnipeg will see unsettled conditions with showers likely on Sunday and a risk of a thunderstorm. The wind will continue out of the south near 30 gusting 50 km/h, but temperatures will be cooler with a high near 22°C. The entire region will see a good chance of showers with the risk of a thunderstorm right through the day. More showers with the risk of a thunderstorm will be possible Sunday night. Temperatures will dip to a low near 16°C with winds easing through the night.

It’s important to note that weekend’s system is moving slowly, and will have the potential of producing very slow-moving lines of thunderstorms as it trudges eastwards. The slow progression of these storms means they will be capable of producing significant rainfall accumulations with a risk of flash flooding. Long Range Outlook

The unsettled conditions will likely stay for Monday before gradual clearing begins working into the region on Tuesday. As the sun appears next week, so too will a prolonged stretch of seasonably cool weather. Daytime highs are forecast to drop into the mid- to upper teens for much of the next week.

Fall-Like Weather Moves In

An Arctic ridge will bring chillier, fall-like conditions to Winnipeg over the next few days.

Cooler temperatures will be in place this morning across southern Manitoba as an Arctic ridge continues its trek across the province. The city will see sunshine give way to some afternoon cloudiness today with breezy north-northwest winds near 20 km/h. Temperatures will be cool with a high of just 20°C. The clear skies will continue tonight with a low near 6°C and diminishing winds.

On Thursday, more seasonal temperatures will return to the region as the Arctic ridge moves off into Ontario. Winnipeg should see a high temperatures near 23°C with a southeasterly wind near 20 km/h developing in the afternoon. Skies will stay mainly sunny through the day. The city will see a few clouds overnight as temperatures dip to a low near 12°C.

Cloud cover will push in early on Friday as a large trough of low pressure moves towards the region. It will be a moderately windy day with southerlies into the 30 gusting 50 km/h range developing in the morning. Temperatures will climb into the mid-20s before showers spread into the region in the afternoon. The chance for showers–along with a slight risk of a thunderstorm–will continue right through the night. Winnipeg will see a mild low on Friday night near 17°C.

Long Range Outlook

A rather unsettled weekend is on tap for much of southern Manitoba. The slow-moving upper trough is forecast to produce several rounds of showers and/or thunderstorms over the region Friday night through Tuesday. Temperatures look to hover near seasonal values with southerly winds on Saturday turning northwesterly for the first half of next week.

Hot and (Briefly) Muggy Conditions Return

Winnipeg will see more heat with building humidity before a cold front passes through on Thursday, bringing a chance of showers or thunderstorms.

An upper ridge over the province will bring another hot day to Winnipeg. The city will see daytime highs near 30°C under mainly sunny skies today. Dew points will gradually rise through the day as southerly winds of 20 to 30 km/h draw humidity northwards. This will produce humidex values approaching the mid-30s this afternoon. The wind will persist out of the south tonight near 20 km/h with increasing cloud. This will result in a warm, muggy night with a low near 21°C.

There’s a lot of diversity in the model forecast solutions for Wednesday night. Some models have no precipitation for Winnipeg, while others sustain an area of thunderstorms from southern Saskatchewan into the region. Either way, if there is going to be any precipitation it likely won’t arrive in Winnipeg until early Thursday morning. The synoptic pattern isn’t particularly favourable for sustaining nocturnal convection, but if the thunderstorms in Saskatchewan can organize early enough, they may be able to last all the way to the Red River Valley. On Thursday, a cold front will push across the province early in the day. Behind the front, moderate westerly winds of 30 to 40 gusting 50 km/h will clear skies and usher in a drier air mass. Temperatures will still be warm with a high near 29°C, but the drier conditions will make it more comfortable. Winds will continue out of the southwest at 10 to 20 km/h on Thursday night. Temperatures will head to a low near 17°C with increasing cloud.

Friday will bring breezy conditions to southern Manitoba again as a low pressure system passes to the north. Westerly winds will pick back up into the 20 to 30 km/h range in the Red River Valley with mixed to cloudy skies. There will be a chance of showers with this system as well as moisture wraps around the low. Potential rainfall amounts amounts don’t look particularly significant; just light accumulations of a couple mm look possible. Temperatures will be cooler with a high near 25 or 26°C.

Skies will clear Friday night with diminishing winds. Winnipeg will see a low near 16°C.

Long Range Outlook

Warm weather will return to the region on Saturday with highs returning to the 30°C mark with mostly sunny skies. Showers or thunderstorms will be possible on Sunday with a low pressure system forecast to move across southern Manitoba.
