Hot Start Followed By Big Cool Down

After a hot start to the week today in Winnipeg, a cold front passing on Tuesday will usher in much cooler conditions.

Temperatures will soar above 30°C today in Winnipeg as a broad area of low pressure moves through the region. A west-southwest flow will send highs up to around 31°C with comfortable humidity levels. Skies will remain mainly sunny, and those aforementioned winds will only be around 20 km/h. Temperatures will remain mild tonight with a low near 18°C.

Tuesday will bring more cloud to the region and near-seasonal temperatures. Temperatures will climb to around 27°C before a cold front drops through the region. The front will bring increasing cloud and begin cooling off temperatures. There will be a chance for some showers or isolated thunderstorms in the afternoon, but low moisture and dynamic support will limit the rainfall potential. Winds will be notable with northerlies up to 30 to 40 km/h moving in for the afternoon.

A sharp cold front will sweep southwards through the Red River Valley on Tuesday afternoon.

A high pressure system moving into the region will bring significantly cooler temperatures on Tuesday night wth lows heading back towards 10°C. Winds will gradually diminish to around 10 to 15 km/h on Tuesday night.

Wednesday will see mixed skies gradually clear, but temperatures will be markedly cooler with a high near 21°C. Winds will be light out of the north-northeast as the high moves through. Expect another cool night on Wednesday night with a low near 11°C and light winds.

Long Range Outlook

Temperatures will return back towards seasonal values for the remainder of the week, but forecasts are indicating that unsettled conditions will return to the region. A few disturbances moving through will bring the chance of showers or thunderstorms back to the region Thursday night through Friday.

Unsettled Conditions Lead to Summer Heat on Sunday

Cloudy skies with a chance of showers or thunderstorms will mark the transition into warmer weather that will arrive in Winnipeg on Sunday.

Winnipeg will see mixed to cloudy today as another disturbance tracks towards Manitoba. A chance of showers or thunderstorms will develop late in the morning for a few hours as a band of instability moves through the region. Once that moves through, temperatures will continue to a high near 25°C with some sunshine poking out for the afternoon. Winds won’t be too bad, either. Beginning light in the morning, winds in Winnipeg will pick up into the 20 to 30 km/h range out of the southeast for the afternoon.

Skies will cloud up again on Friday evening with a chance for showers or thunderstorms redeveloping overnight. The persistent southeasterlies will begin drawing more humid air into Manitoba tonight, raising dew point values into the mid-teens. Winnipeg should see a low near 16°C.

Any remaining showers should clear out early Saturday, leaving Winnipeg with mostly cloudy skies and just a very small chance of an isolated shower. Temperatures will be near-seasonal in Winnipeg with a high near 23°C. Winds will continue out fo the southeast, but only at 10 to 20 km/h. The cloud cover will begin to break up Saturday night as temperatures drop to a low near 17°C.

While Winnipeg will see a couple chances for showers/thunderstorms Friday into Saturday, there’s always that chance it dances around the city…

Sunday will be a scorcher in Winnipeg with the clouds giving way to mixed skies and temperatures soaring to a high near 30°C. Winds will be windy out of the southeast at 30 to 40 km/h, though, which will make spending time outside a little less pleasant.

Sunday night will bring more cloud back into the Red River Valley as a cold front pushes eastwards into the province. While western Manitoba will almost certainly see a high chance for thunderstorms, it’s less certain in Winnipeg and other areas further east. It will depend on how quickly the front moves east, which in turn depends on how much and what sort of thunderstorm activity develops. That said, Winnipeg will see increasing chances for thunderstorms overnight Sunday into Monday morning. Temperatures will dip to a low near 18°C.

Long Range Outlook

Once the cold front passes on Monday, it looks like Winnipeg will remain in a much cooler pattern. Daytime highs look to move to seasonal to seasonably cool values with highs in the low 20’s for the remainder of next week. Winnipeg will see variable cloudiness and generally dry conditions.

Cool, Dry Weather Ahead

Winnipeg will see a break from the heat for the remainder of the week, but the dry conditions continue with no significant rain on the horizon.

A cold front will sweep through Winnipeg today, bringing cooler temperatures to the region that will stick around for the rest of the week. Winnipeg will see a high temperature near 16°C both today and Friday, but Thursday will bring even cooler conditions with a high near 12°C. Overnight lows will sit right near freezing tonight and tomorrow. Friday night should bring slightly warmer temperatures with lows near 4 or 5°C.

Winnipeg will see mixed to cloudy skies this morning and as the cold front passes midday, followed by clearing skies this afternoon. Winds will be quite breezy behind the front as they pick up to around 40 gusting 60 km/h out of the north. The cooler temperatures and northerly wind will bring a chill to the air that will put a bit of a damper on the late-day sunshine. The cold front has a tiny chance of producing scattered showers as it moves through, but they’ll be short lived with little, if any, measurable rainfall.

The wind will diminish this evening, leaving clear skies and light northerly winds in Winnipeg for the night and much of Thursday. Cloud cover will begin working back into the region on Thursday afternoon, bringing mostly cloudy skies to Winnipeg on Thursday night.

Winds remain light on Friday, and mixed to mostly cloudy skies look likely. Some clearing will work into the Red River Valley late in the day, resulting in partly cloudy skies on Friday night.

Long Range Outlook

The heat returns on the weekend with temperatures climbing back into the 20’s under sunny skies. It looks as though both Sunday and Monday could bring highs approaching the 30°C mark again.

While often this would be cause to celebrate, the extremely dry conditions will only be getting worse, and the warm weather will bring with it an extreme fire danger.

Unfortunately, little change is on the horizon. There’s a slight chance of some showers next Tuesday, but it’s easy to see an outcome where all the rain remains south of the 49th parallel. Until measurable rain arrives, fire prevention will keep becoming a larger issue as everything continues to dry out.

Summer Sizzler For The Game 6 Winnipeg Whiteout Street Party

Temperatures will soar into the upper 20’s in Winnipeg today, bringing the first taste of summer for fans heading downtown to cheer on the Jets!

Winnipeg will see light southerly winds with temperatures soaring to a high near 29°C today. Skies will remain sunny with southwesterly winds of 10 to 20 km/h for much of the day, but a cold front slumping southwards will move through Winnipeg this evening, bringing northerly winds near 30 km/h, slightly cooler temperatures, and some cloud cover.

If you’re heading downtown for the Jets game tonight, you’ll be in for some great conditions. Starting around 6PM, temperatures downtown will be near 26°C with light winds. The cold front will push through around 7 or 8PM, bringing northerly winds of 15-25 km/h and cooling temperatures to around 18°C by 10PM. A bit of cloud cover will move in through the evening, producing mixed to mostly cloudy skies by late in the evening. It looks like everything should remain dry with the cold front not likely bringing any rain to the city.

This warm weather will come with a risk, though. Extremely dry conditions continue, and as yesterday’s fire on Wilkes showed, it doesn’t take much to start a blaze.1 Relative humidity values will be under 20% today, continuing to present a significant fire hazard.

The latter half of tonight will bring cloudy skies to the city with temperatures dipping to a low near 12°C.

Tuesday will bring mixed to mostly cloudy skies to Winnipeg. Temperatures will be much cooler than Monday, but still quite pleasant with a high near 19°C. Winds will remain breezy out of the northeast at 20 to 30 km/h. Beginning in early evening, a chance for showers or thunderstorms will develop through the Red River Valley that will persist through the night. Activity isn’t necessarily expected to be significant or widespread, but a little activity is possible as a low pressure system moves through the province. Winnipeg should see a low near 12°C on Tuesday night.

Breezy conditions will develop in Winnipeg behind a cold front that moves through the area on Wednesday afternoon

Wednesday will marked by breezy northerly winds in the wake of a cold front that moves through early in the afternoon. Temperatures will climb to a high near 18°C before the front moves through, then cool to the low-teens through the afternoon. Winds will pick up out of the north behind the front, strengthening to 30 to 40 km/h. On the bright side, the northerly winds will clear out the cloud in the Red River Valley, bringing mainly clear skies for Wednesday night with a low near +3°C.

Long Range Outlook

The remainder of the week will bring cooler temperatures and variable cloudiness. Unfortunately, no significant rain is on the horizon, so the dry weather continues.
